of the fish population in Canadian waters. killing them is most certainly not the right and only solution to this problem. Some say the number of cod, which seals eat, is decreasing as seal numbers increase and there is also evidence of this problem, while only 3% of harp seals’ diet is cod.
Humans over fishing has a bigger impact of the decreased population of fish. More than 6,000 Canadians earn livings from seals’ and fish’s sport and commercial industries. The profits from the commercial industries provide 5% of 6,000 peoples’ income, so why not join this industry and earn easy money by simply hunting seals, doesn’t sound too complicated to them and clearly hasn’t from the outcomes. Some say the process is done quickly and the pain is minimal, while they also say that hunters can’t be sure that the seal is dead before their skins are removed in 66% of cases. Seals are “clubbed” but most are shot, only a small number are killed with a hakpik. The killing takes place outside, where as in a slaughter house they are out of sight, also from their families while being killed and dragged away from them. A saying many people use is “out of sight, out of mind”, although this situation isn’t something that should be thrown aside and forgotten by it not being in sight. Many people think baby seals are the ones being innocently killed, baby seals aren’t legally allowed to be …show more content…
killed. When they are legally allowed to be hunted, they are after being abandoned by their mothers. Which to me still doesn’t make sense, abandoned or not this isn’t supposed to happen to them, especially at this age. In conclusion, and from my point of view, I think that this is not a right way to kill an innocent animal, killing an innocent animal itself isn’t right in any way, over populating or not.
Mining
Most people are against fracking because of the dangers that it poses to the environment, to animals and even to humans.
There are many dangers to this method of extracting natural gas. Water, air, noise, and light pollution are caused from fracking. Methane pollution has a great impact on climate change and most of it is caused by fracking. Fracking causes possible contamination of groundwater, exposure to toxic chemicals, blowout due to gas explosions, waste disposal, large volume of water use in water-deficient regions, etc. Injecting fluids into the earth cause earthquakes. It’s not only harmful to the environment but also to us humans. Workers who work in fracking industries, are very likely to have long term health issues from the chemicals they inhale on a daily basis. There are also a number of benefits of fracking. Increasing reliance on natural gas, rather than coal, results in many public health benefits even though fracking still does harm us in other ways. Natural gas produces only somewhere between 44 and 50 percent of the greenhouse gas emissions compared with the burning of coal. Water intensity is lower for fracking than other fossil fuels. Expensive oil keeps the cost of natural gas appealing because it is cheap and decreases our dependency on foreign fuel sources. Because we are now relying on gas since fracking is so effective and because of its low prices, we are no longer trying to find alternative energy sources. When we were worried about not being
able to use cars, for instance, we started searching and looking into electric cars or solar powered cars. The danger with fracking is that we are no longer going to look for alternative energy sources such as the sun or wind. Instead, we will pump harmful chemicals into our environment and cause global warming to happen quicker. In my opinion we shouldn’t continue to use fraking in the future because of all the impacts it has on us and our environment.
Energy
We are a developed country and we can afford to use a lot of energy. Driving to school or to the bus stop because we’d rather drive than stand at the bus stop in a blizzard is an example. Canada is a large country with a cold climate, we need a lot of gas and heating which consumes a lot of energy. Most Canadians drive long distances every day for either work or school. Our economy is also based on high energy consuming industries, such as mining, forestry, paper and steel manufacturing. Since Canada is a developed country most things are expensive such as, houses, food, transportation, clothing, and basic everyday needs, and to be able to pay for all our needs we need to do what we can to earn that money. One thing leads to another, we want food we need to pay for it, to be able to pay for it we need to work, and to work we need to travel long distances or open business which consume lots of energy. Many people in developed countries tend to be lazy and always look for the easiest way out although it may consume lots of energy. We’d rather have the whole house air conditioned rather than being bothered to use fans, wash our dishes using dishwashers instead of handwashing, or keeping our computers and chargers plugged in because we’d rather go to them when we’re in need and have them ready for use. Our large population and literacy rate, also leads to educated Canadians opening businesses, and coming up with lots of new different kinds of technologies that consume a lot of energy, over time we are starting to introduce new energy efficient technologies, but at the moment we are still one of the highest energy consumers in the world. Canada carries a large amount of natural resources and the methods to extract these natural resources consume a lot of energy. So in conclusion factors such as long travel distances for the movement of people and goods, lot’s of heating and lighting in our long winters as well as an economy based on high energy consuming industries lead to Canada’s large energy consumption. All Canadians have busy lives and don’t tend to pay attention to issues that aren’t really in sight or don’t directly affect us.
