In Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, the episode of the Sorting Hat reveals a lot about Harry Potter’s character. During this chapter, when the Sorting Hat is contemplating on which house to assign Harry to, we are reminded of characteristics that had been revealed to the reader throughout the first few chapters of the book. The reader is also figuratively being told in advance of what to expect of Harry Potter’s gifts and talents throughout the entire Harry Potter series. A lot of Harry Potter readers get the sense of the good (Gryffindor) vs. evil (Slytherin). Before the Sorting Hat was ever even placed on Harry’s head, Harry had learned of his connection to Voldemort and knew that Voldemort was housed in Slytherin. For this reason, when the hat was placed on him, Harry immediately speaks his will to the sorting hat. Something that other students wouldn’t have ever thought to do. Most students probably would never question or oppose which house they are assigned to, because of the understanding that the Sorting Hat gives them their fate. Harry never hesitated to take that chance. Harry thought out loud. He spoke his will- not to be placed in Slytherin. Harry’s will was stronger than fate in this particular episode. The way that the story plays out- fate is not always superior to human will. Harry didn’t ask to be placed in a certain house- rather, he specifically requested not to be placed in a certain house- leaving him completely open to any of the three other houses. . It wasn’t about the sorting hat giving Harry a choice. It was about Harry knowing that he did not want to come to the extent of carrying evil traits that those in Slytherin
