Haruko’s World is an ethnography about the rural Japanese woman in 1970s. The author of Haruko’s World is Gail Lee Bernstein. Bernstein works at a University in San Diego as a professor. Is is an American anthropologist and studies Japanese culture. Haruko's World is her second ethnography trip to Japan.
Bernstein I feel is a very organized person. She separates her work, home affairs, and emotions . Living with Haruko she is dismayed at how with every action Haruko ruins this separation and drags personal and work into one big pile. Bernstein’ s lack of interest in what she looks like summary dismays Haruko, but Bernstein cares deeply for the functionality of outfits.
To write this paper Bernstein wanted to go behind scenes and casually stroll in and let them open up to her. But for the first …show more content…
month, everyone was too cautious of her motives. Once she announced that she was learning as a sense the hamlet opened up to her and allowed her to join them. But this has its own restrictions. She has to give speeches and sit with the males, at the exact opposite place she wanted to be at.
Environmental
Haruko and her family live on the small Island of Shikoku. Though it is one of the islands closer to the equator the helmet in one of the highest and therefore coldest. Japan naturally being a very wet island group has very moisturized air causing humid summers and bitter winters. In Haruko's home, there is a centralized heat spot that radiates heat throughout the house; this is called a kotatsu. The kotatsu is not very effective at heating the house. Harkins house is a normal farm house with wood siding and most walls inside are rice paper. The side room that Bernstein lived in was the corner room and nicknamed the ice box; this was due to it being the farthest room from the kotatsu heater and having sliding wood panel doors up to the rice fields allowing cold most air in. Haruko lives in the main house as the basis. Most of the time the mother in law is in the main house as bisio and the fans-bisio, daughter in law is in the guest house. Haruko felt luck living in the second story of the house across the street from the main. But ____ was kind enough to allow Haruko to take over as bisio.
The house is rich with a kitchen and a bath in the house. They have nine rooms simple and with minimal privacy. This is a grand thing most houses use community bath houses and kitchens are elite.
Economic The farming family grows crops all year.
Haruko doses majority of the work; she works dawn to dusk. When she was pregnant she worked until she gave birth and as soon as possible she was out working again; allowing her mother-in-law to raise her children. She sometimes picks up the extra work when her husband, Sho-ichi, devotes himself to the community. Haruko occasionally works at a second job for a short time. Many women make clothing for the family. This helps with keeping spending low. The community is a rural farming community. Mostly rice and cash crops are grown. It has seasons where it requires all hands on deck; these harvesting seasons are huge to the economy. Though this brings in huge amounts of money; the family has to split the rest of the year from this one transaction period. Families often need a second job or a second income at some point in the year. Trades are often done; an example is when Haruko was very ill she traded rice for her medicine. The next hamlet over is a fishing community. Where diving and fishing is essentially the only economic industry. These villages work hard year round for little
gain.
Social Construct
In this hamlet the community families are all acquainted with each other, the families are ancient. They care deeply for the welfare of community honor; they look out for each other. Often suggesting how you should boost that person's honor. Show how this person is impressive in front of wife. They ask Bernstein to speak in English to impress the surrounding community. One example is that the English teacher is at the principle house speaking broken English to Bernstein and is seen as admirable because he can speak English more fluently than the rest of them.
Genders have subtle roles. In work the woman are above the males; but in social community functions, it is the males who sit at the head of the table and get first pickings. A woman being the breadwinners are in charge of every action inside the house. In the house when the woman cooks, clean, and knit males may just sit around. They value the female life above male life but value male ideas more. This is not distinctively obvious and most everything is split evenly. It is hard however to be completely equal in everything.
