A community is a place where people around supposed to be able to live and thrive together. When one thinks of a community, the image that most likely is visualized is one of a place where each person lives harmoniously with all the other members of that community. While this may be the typical image of a community, it is not the realistic view. In reality communities can share both good and bad aspects. In Place Matters: Metropolitics for the Twenty-First Century Peter Dreier, John Mollenkopf, and Todd Swanstrom make the argument that the place a person lives ultimately matters over all else; the place which a person lives effects the choices that that he/she makes and determines his/her ability to obtain a high quality of life.…
Peck explains the word "community" as something that we tend to overuse without ever truly understanding it; almost making it meaningless. We have a tendency to relate ourselves to our neighbors, without having ever actually talked to them. I recently moved into a rental house close to school. I have been living there a few months and have only so much as spoken to one of my neighbors. This one neighbor, coincidentally, happens to be my landlord. While geographically this is an area where many people and I have…
It is a term inclusive of both physical and nonphysical factors. The physical factors include the people in our town, the town’s infrastructure, its services, its conditions such as level of sanitation, and more. The nonphysical factors include the amount of money earned by the population, the interaction and support the town offers, and other social determinants. This is a broader definition of community than offered by the documentary, Unnatural Causes. Unnatural Causes does not explicitly define “community” but shows through many examples that a community is one’s immediate surroundings, predominantly the group of people by which someone is surrounded. From watching the videos, a community to me became more than what is around someone’s house; it became everyone and everything that affects a group of people, whether connected through geography or…
An organization, in its simplest form, is comprised of people brought together to achieve a common goal whether it be solving a problem, selling a product or providing a service. The existence of the organization is wholly dependent on the collective body of individuals involved and it is these individuals that are the driving force behind the success or failure of a company. The relationships that connect the people within the organization dictate how the culture is developed and perceived.…
the definition of community varied depending upon the sociologist doing the defining. Maciver (1920) offered a compelling definition of community: A community is a focus of social life, the common living of social beings (p. 24). Other notable sociologists felt that community was far more than just the collection of human beings.…
People working together in a structured environment who strive to achieve a common goal or objective is an organization. Some organizations are businesses which exist to market goods and/or services in order to generate profits. Others are non-profit in nature, such as community youth sports leagues, community service groups like shelters and food banks and churches which exist to serve the spiritual needs of society. Regardless of their purpose, all organizations share one attribute; they must be run by effective people who can instill the organization’s core values/cultures and motivate others to passionately work to achieve the organizations goals, effectively and efficiently. In other words, they require leadership.…

“Every successful individual knows that his or hers achievement depends on a community of persons working together,” as said by Paul Ryan. Communities can have a very positive impact on an individual’s life and his/hers accomplishments. In fact, community can be the very basis for people’s success. As defined by the dictionary, community is a social group of any size whose members reside in a specific locality, share government and often have a cultural and historical heritage. Johnny Cade, from the Outsiders, Keith Ore, Justice Miller, and “the World Is Not a Pleasant Place to be”, all demonstrate how community can positively affect an individual.…

How does a community get its makeup and who determine if the community has a particular kind of dance or a particular skyline? If you open up google and type in “definition of community” and hit enter three main definitions pop up. The first says “a group of people living in the same place or having a particular characteristic in common.” This can include family, a church, inmates in jail, people in a neighborhood, soldiers, and the list goes on. The second definition that pops up is a little more intimate definition, “a feeling of fellowship with others, as a result of sharing common attitudes, interests, and goals.” The reason these definitions are relevant is to clarify that communities…
