I feel that hate speech has already had a major effect on our country and needs to be put to an end. If a person feels comfortable enough to share comments about others that are violent and hateful, they may feel that it is ok to do harm to those individuals. In the news, there are many stories on hate speech that lead to hate crimes.
According to ABC News, two weeks ago at the University of Hartford, a young white student began expressing her views about her black roommate, Jasmine on social media. Browns posted “Finally did it, I got rid of my roommate. After ½ months of spitting in her coconut oil, putting moldy clam dip in her lotions...putting her toothbrush where the sun doesn't shine, and so much more. I can
finally say goodbye black Barbie.” (Stine 12).
This type as well as other types of hate speech should not be tolerated because it is the primary cause of the incident.
Not only did Briana post about doing harm to Jasmine and putting her in danger, she also acted on the words. Briana used those hateful words and acted on them and Jasmine was hospitalized due to the bacteria placed in her toothbrush and face cream. Briana did not stop at just those crimes.
She went on to smear used feminine hygiene napkins on her roommate's belongings because she hated her that much. Following this disgusting act, the police had to get involved and Briana was arrested and taken to jail. However, she will not spend longer than one year in prison.
I believe that Briana did deserve jail time for the things that she said as well as the things that she did. I don't agree with how much time she will serve in jail because it gives Jasmine no justice. Jasmine was targeted because she was African American. Briana expressed her views about African Americans and it led up to her acting on her thoughts. Hate speech makes acting on a hate crime that much simpler. It's as though the government’s stance on hate speech makes it ok to do harm to others and it should not be this way. Hate speech and hate crime isn't something that just came about. People have been allowed to express hate speech since the Klu Klux Klan was started on December 24, 1865. (King 297). The Klu Klux Klan used hate speech to put African Americans in fear because they hated the black race.
