Vandalized By Speech Summary
In the article “Vandalized by Speech” by Gregory Rodriguez, he claims that hate speech is form of vandalism. He compares the subject to a broken window; if left untended, it signals people to do more damage. Rodriguez states that any discussion of the subject leads to the invocation of the 1st Amendment. He goes on to say that hate speech is a threat to our democracy and society, and it should be regulated. Additionally, Rodriguez argues that hate speech is making appearances everyone from political campaigns to college pep bands. He claims that minorities bear an extra burden when entering the public space. He also points out that negative campaigning leads to less political participation. Furthermore, Rodriguez argues that rhetorical vandalism …show more content…
It is hard to go one day without seeing some form of hate speech. I see examples of it on social media platforms on a daily basis. People do not think about the negative effects that occurs because of what they said. Moreover, the people who face hate speech may feel angered or frustrated enough that they, too, perpetuate hate speech. People do not care to listen to those who claim hate speech is an issue because they think that the 1st Amendment gives them the right to say anything they want without consequences. The freedom of speech does not mean that you should say negative things to those of a different race or religion.
Hate speech is also occurring in politics. Instead of sharing their views and debated key topics, many politicians just want to criticize his or her opponent based on their religious views, ethnic background, or opinions. Donald Trump is a recent example of hate speech in politics. He has called Mexicans drug dealers and rapists, and he has even accused all of them being murderers. This negatively affects voting because people may not want to vote at all if one candidate is perpetuating hate speech and the other has views that he or she disagrees

People are entitled to one of the rights listed in the first amendment, the freedom of speech. It’s true that some people are hateful but even if we don’t like, agree, or even joke about it we don’t have the right to control them. Hate crimes happens any and every where, in small and large cities, and every state. As long as hate crimes have been happening the actual name “hate crime” is new and so is the idea of special treatment of these offenses (Gerstenfeld 2010). The first hate crime law was not passed until 1980 and 3 decades later only 44 states, District of Columbia and the federal government have some form of hate crime legislation (Gerstenfeld 2010). In this day and time I find it hard to believe that not all 50 states have some type of hate crime law. Some people do not believe there should be special laws for hate crimes because they say all violent crimes are hateful regardless of race and sexual orientation. Those in favor of hate crime laws argue that there are hate crime laws because; the person who commits a hate crime deserve an increased punishment because these type of crimes are worse than ordinary; hate crime laws will deter the act; and that the laws will show that this type of crime is not allowed (Gerstenfeld 2010). In the US the most frequently reported hate crime is racism against blacks with 3,000 of the 8,000 hate crime reported to the FBI against black people (FBI 2009). In 1990 the Hate Crime Statistics Act was…

There is a fine line in what is considered freedom of speech and what impedes on another person’s freedom. In fact John Stuart Mill states in his book On Liberty, “the only purpose for which power can be rightfully exercised over any member of a civilized community, against his will, is to prevent harm to others” (1978, 9). The use of hate speech has a strong impact, especially in minority groups where the support system is not very strong. One example hate speech being persecuted is in an article from the website Grapevine titled Ten Charged with Hate Speech Towards LGBT Community. While some individuals may argue that the freedom of speech is the right of all Americans, there are definitely limits when it comes to the hatred and harassment of a particular group. The law enacted which included sexual orientation in the group where hate speech is not allowed stemmed from the fact that the suicide rate for LGBT teens is much higher than it is for other teens. The Trevor project found LGBT teens are 4 times more likely to attempt…

Greg Lukianoff an attorney, graduate student from Stanford Law School and author of, “Twitter, Hate Speech and The Costs of Keeping Quiet.” Where Lukianoff argues against hate speech being removed from social media since the First Amendment says freedom of speech. Therefore, he writes, “‘Hate speech’ is constitutionally protected in the United Sates. But the push against ‘hurtful’ and ‘blasphemous’ speech (primarily speech offensive to Islam) is gaining ground throughout the world” (388). Lukianoff claims humans need to hear these hateful comments because it keeps them aware of the hate around the world. Of course, it is important to stay aware of hate and true it does not disappear when social media removes it. Nevertheless, the goal is to eliminate the hate but, hate does not stop if the toxic people are not punished as result, of this toxic people stay ignorant to the harm they are causing and it is an endless cycle. Social media also makes it harder to fix the toxic environment because it keeps humans…

In the debate over censorship of hate speech on college campuses, the opponents conclude that colleges should censor hate speech on campus because minorities have the civil right to equal enjoyment of education, free of harassment. On the other side of the debate, the supporters conclude that we should not censor hate speech on campus because students have a right to academic freedom. As an African-American male growing up in the South, hate speech was not an idea to be debated or a conceptual item to be reflected upon. It was the reality, as raw and real as the heat on a hot summer's day. I experienced hate speech before I was even old enough to understand it. After years of being called every racial slur in the book, I realized that even hate speech could serve a purpose. This combined with the current conversation surrounding Donald Trump's campaign and its rhetoric is why I…

Some laws define hate crimes to include attacks inspired not only by racial or religious bias but also by antipathy to veterans, disabled people, sexual minorities, and the elderly. As the list of protected groups gets longer and longer, the law may be approaching a situation in which every crime is a hate crime (Page 2).” As I said before, the U.S is made up of minorities. If we keep on adding minorities to the list, we are going to be putting all citizens…

People who commit hate crimes are dealt with harshly. They get more severe sentences and punishments then people who commit normal crimes. An example of this was in Georgia when a man attacked his mentally ill niece, calling her a racial slur and a disgrace to his daddy's memory while hitting her in the head. He received 2 years for the physical attack and 4 years for the racial slur. He would have only gotten 2 years but since he made it a hate crime he got 4 extra years.…

Kelsey Hutto got the news that vandals had painted "Heil Trump," an anti-gay slur and a swastika on the side of her church,” Trumps effect has caused many people to not only support what he believes, but show what they believe by attacking a group that Trump has not mentioned (Yan). A good amount of these racist actions have been on public places. It seems like the people following through with these acts of racism, want the most attention possible in order to come out on top, compared to the supporters of the other candidate, “When the rector at the Episcopal Church of Our Saviour in Silver Spring, Maryland opened the church on Sunday morning, he found that a sign advertising Spanish services had been ripped and vandalized with the words, ‘TRUMP NATION WHITES ONLY.’” Maryland churches are being vandalized because of people's political views (Reilly). It is sad to think that average people have the power to bring down others, based off the fact that their belief turned out to be…
