Hawaii World War 2 Summary
First settled by Polynesians sailing from other Pacific islands between A.D. 300 and 600, Hawaii was visited in 1778 by British captain James Cook, who called the group the Sandwich Islands.

Hawaii was a native kingdom throughout most of the 19th century, when the expansion of the sugar industry (pineapple came after 1898) meant increasing U.S. business and political involvement. In 1893, Queen Liliuokalani was deposed, and a year later the Republic of Hawaii was established with Sanford B. Dole as president. Following annexation (1898), Hawaii became a U.S. territory in 1900.

The Japanese attack on the naval base at Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941, was directly responsible for U.S. entry into World War II.

In January of 1778, Captain Cook discovered the Hawaiian Islands. Many foreigners from around the world began to arrive, introducing many new things to the Hawaiians. Foreign influence brought trade to Hawaii, which gave Hawaiians metal and guns. Even though foreign influence had some positive effects on Hawaii, I believe that foreign influence had a negative impact on Hawaii because trade brought not only guns and metal, but it also led to famine, disease, debt, and the deaths and lessening of the Hawaiian population.…

“BECAUSE it is proposed by said treaty to confiscate said property, technically called the crown lands, those legally entitled thereto, either now or in succession, receiving no consideration whatever for estates, their title to which has been always undisputed, and which is legitimately in my name at this date.” In this quotation from the letter written from Queen Liliuokalani to the president of the United States, Pres. McKinney, in 1897, states that the islands of Hawaii, also known as the crown lands, are still legally entitled to her. That she is the rightful ruler and that the title of queen is still hers. The counter claim to this, however, is that even though Queen Liliuokalani did inherit the throne of Hawaii in 1891, the Americans, if they have the power to do so, can still take the Hawaiians Independence from them.…

This was to gain support in creating a national park in the state of Hawaii. January 20, 1916 was the date of the fourth and final draft of the Hawaii National Park bill; this was introduced by Jonah Kuhio. The committees met and on April 17 the House approved the bill. Then the Senate followed and on August 1, 1916; our president at the time President Wilson signed the bill into law and created the twelfth National Park. It wasn't until five years later that a group of people got together at the crater for the dedication of the Hawaii National Park. In the early years of this park the five year period was due to a restriction in one of the clauses which required that the park be "reasonably accessible in all of its parts" before the public funds could be used to maintain and develop areas of the park. The first superintendent of the Hawaii National Park came into office in April of 1922. His name was Thomas R. Boles; he was also an engineer by training. He had the first park headquarters built in 1923 by the parks staff and…

Ironically, an attack intended to prevent the United States and their superior Navy, from interfering with Japan’s military objectives in the…

“The Aloha State” was annexed to the United States in 1959, but its history can be dated back centuries earlier. Approximately 1,500 years ago, Polynesians from the Marquesas Islands first set foot in Hawaii. Hawaiian culture, a mixture of many Polynesian traditions, flourished over the centuries. The arrival of Captain James Cook, Protestant missionaries, and European diseases in the late 18th and early 19th centuries stunted the growth and development of the native Hawaiian population. Western influence continued to grow and by 1893, American colonists, who controlled much of Hawaii's economy, overthrew the Hawaiian Kingdom. Although many natives died in the hustle of their history, their culture lived on. When on vacationing in Hawaii, tourists can experience the vibrancy of the Hawaiian culture firsthand.…
