One of Haymitch’s more undesirable characteristics is the fact that he is a drunk. He constantly embarrasses himself; he publically falls off a platform in front of the TV during the reaping. He is also very incompetent because of this addiction. When he should be training and advising his tributes, he spends his time drinking. He is also very unpopular because of his drinking. Very much a loner, he is not married and lives by himself with no friends. He throws up, smells bad, and acts badly. Haymitch is most definitely an unmannered, rude drunk. Yet Haymitch is also a winner. Once a tribute for the Hunger Games, Haymitch ended up winning. He is the only living tribute and winner from District 12, making him the sole mentor for Peeta and Katniss. No one really knows how he won; they expect he outsmarted the others. As a mentor, he knows how to play the game. He knows how to use Peeta’s love as an advantage and gets Katniss sponsors. Then he sends or withholds sponsors’ gifts to communicate with Katniss. At the end of the Hunger Games, Haymitch knows Katniss is in trouble and that she must look innocent and in love. Probably the strongest characteristic of Haymitch is that he is a rebel.
