EFFECTS OF GLOBAL SYSTEM MOBILE COMMUNICATIONS ON HUMANS
INTRODUCTION
1. Global System Mobile (GSM) phones have brought a rapid revolution in the field of communication and altered our way of life to an unimaginable degree. Anytime some old member of a family applies tales regarding prior modes of communication like beepers, postal letters and telegrams, the children of Twenty-First Century feel really surprised. So, it’s a fact that the Mobile phone technology has started a new period in Nigeria that has uprooted the old fashioned lifestyle entirely. However, it doesn’t mean this technology has no effect on people adversely. Everything on the planet earth has two attributes; advantages and hazards. The same will go true for the phone technologies. The technology is effective as well as disadvantageous. In this paper, the advantages will be considered towards the associated hazards in order to obtain a accurate understanding of the effects of mobile phones on individual life.
AIM
2. The aim of the paper is to highlight the hazards associated with Global System Mobile communications.

3. The paper will cover: a. Launching of the GSM Communications in Nigeria b. Advantages of Mobile Phones c. Effects of Mobile Phones in Humans

4. In Nigeria like in all other developing countries the launching of Mobile phones has been instrumental to the rapid increase in telecommunications accessibility. Before digital telephone was introduced, the country had less than 500,000 telephone lines. Cell phones were available in Nigeria since 1990s. These were analogue phones and were deployed by NITEL, the only National Carrier then. The reason for the low success of these analogue mobile technologies was because they were expensive and seen as status symbol rather than a necessity.     Nigeria is not left out in this race for rapid development as the nation’s economy has been subjected to years of economic reversal via mismanagement and bad leadership. The Nigerian telecommunications sector was grossly underdeveloped before the sector was deregulated under the military regime of General Ibrahim Babangida in 1992 with the establishment of a regulatory body, the Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC). So far the NCC has issued various licenses to private telecommunications operator. These include 7 fixed telephony providers that have activated 90,000 lines, 35 Internet service providers with a customer base of about 17,000. Several VSAT service providers are in operation, and have improved financial intermediation by providing on-line banking services to most banks in Nigeria. These licenses allowed private telephone operators (PTOs), to roll out both fixed wireless telephone lines and analogue mobile phones. The return of democracy in 1999 paved the way for the granting of GSM license to 3 service providers: MTN Nigeria, ECONET Wireless Nigeria which is now called ZAIN and NITEL Plc which is now called ZOOM in 2001 and later GLO.…

The United States began to develop the AMPS (Advanced Mobile Phone Service) network, while European countries were developing their own forms of communication. 1.2 History of GSM Technology Europeans quickly realized the disadvantages of each European country operating on their mobile network. It prevents cell phone use from country to country within Europe. With the emerging European Union and high travel volume between countries in Europe this was seen as a problem. Rectifying the situation the Conference of European Posts and Telegraphs (CEPT) assembled a research group with intentions of researching the mobile phone system in Europe. This group was called Group Special Mobile (GSM). For the next ten years the GSM group outlined standards, researched technology and designed a way to implement a pan-European mobile phone network. In 1989 work done by the GSM group was transferred to the European Telecommunication Standards Institute (ETSI). The name GSM was transposed to name the type of service invented. The acronym GSM had been changed from Group Special Mobile to Global Systems Mobile Telecommunications. By April of 1991 commercial service of the GSM network had begun. Just a year and half later in 1993 there were already 36 GSM networks in over 22 countries. Several other countries were on the rise to adopt this new mobile phone network and participate in what was becoming a worldwide standard. At the same time, GSM also became widely used in the Middle East, South Africa and Australia. While the European Union had developed a sophisticated digital cell phone system, the United States was still operating primarily on the old, analog AMPS network and TDMA.
