Hazel Tells Laverne By Katharyn Howd Dec
“Hazel tells LaVerne”, written by Katharyn Howd Machan, shows how women were treated in the past society (Machan 213). The poem alludes to the famous fairy tale, The Frog Prince, by the Brothers Grimm. Hazel recounts the night she met a strange frog when cleaning the bathroom of the Howard Johnsons hotel. In the original fairy tale, a princess loses her golden ball in the spring, and a frog tells her that he will find the ball only if she takes him home and loves him for three days. After three days, the frog becomes a prince and the two lives happily ever after. However, in the poem, the frog gets flushed down three times, and Hazel remains as a poor hotel maid. Though, the poem ends unhappily it has a much deeper meaning than just a fairy tale. …show more content…
Hazel represents the low authority of women in the past society. Women in the past were uneducated, treated contemptuously, and ignored by men. The structure of the poem is not well organized, no punctuation, not even a period at the end, and the language used is reminiscent of southern broken English. This structure emphasizes the notion held by the society that women are illiterate and uneducated. Hazel’s job, which is a hotel maid, symbolizes the hierarchy of women in society in which they were only able to have low and minimal skilled positions. Machan, the poet, describes Hazel as an inferior woman who cannot even think nor dream of a better life. Women in the past lacked self-confidence and pride to go against the power of men. Also, they lived dependent upon men. The only way for the hotel maid to become a princess and get out of her miserable life was to kiss a frog, which was a powerful man in real

I would describe Hazel as probably being a lower class uneducated female. I would have to take a guess that she is uneducated because of the way that she talks and the fact that she is cleaning out a Howard Johnsons restroom. I also think that she may come from the south from the way she runs words together to form other words. As far as Hazel’s personality goes, there is not a whole lot of information to give me a proper idea as to what kind of person she may be. I would have to say that Hazel is rather sassy with her attitude. I think that the idea of a frog coming out of a toilet and proposing that if she kisses him she will become a princess, in all reality, is quite terrifying. And I find it quite funny of Hazel…

From the very beginning the author shows how confident Hazel is. Hazel sticks up for her brother. In the story it says, “... and the next word out of anyone and i'll be their mother to.” This line shows that Hazel, is confident, because to speak up to someone like that you have to have courage and confidence to show people who is boss. Hazel is great at that.…

The poem discusses the funeral of a woman and how she is presented in her funeral as someone people would be more likely to romanticize than what she actually was, perhaps out of a misguided sign of respect. The other more hidden meaning behind the poem is the author's reaction to the women herself and how she is portrayed in almost a spiteful, angry way because of his anger over her wasting her life in gray dullness.…

When he is in the city he runs into a so called “blind” preacher on the streets. The blind man was preaching that there is a God and that people need to give to the church through him. Hazel was very upset about this and started attempting to preach that there is no God and they need to follow him when he starts a new church without a God. When Hazel goes to the place where he is staying, he finds out the “blind” preacher is staying there too. This really makes the situation worse for Hazel. One night Hazel went into the “blind” man’s room and lit a match to see if he was really blind. He had been lying about it. He was just a crook after people’s money. He was using God to make people feel sorry for him and that would in turn make them give him…

In this poem the speaker is a woman. The majority of the poem she talks about what it means to be a woman in her day and age, how it limits her speech, and allows people to make unfair conclusions about her. As far as she is concerned, her critics can't even begin to look past the fact that she's a woman, or imagine that a woman could do something other than work in the kitchen.…

The ironic ending to Machan's poem symbolizes inferiority of women. More specifically, the poem suggests that during that period of time, women were illiterate, and only worked low, minimum skilled positions. Hazel for example, cannot go from “rags to riches” in the blink of a kiss; her social status deceits her from such promises. She accepts that she can never amount to nothing more than being a maid, and that the thought of becoming a princess is complete foolishness. She repeats this disbelief three times in the poem, “an how i can be a princess/me a princess/me/a princess”. Hazel clearly doubts her self-worth; she does not think she's qualified to be fit for royalty. She cannot even fathom the idea that kissing a frog would actually make her a princess. Imposing a happily ever after for herself is incredulous and delusional; Hazel merely laughs at the thought and refuses to believe the frogs proposition. Generally found in fairytales, Hazel is expected to kiss the frog and live happily ever after. She instead “hitsm with my mop” (21), and flushes him back down the toilet. Symbolically flushing her chances of becoming a princess.…

The major theme in the poem is male chauvinism in the work place. The people in charge of the workplace in this particular poem are men and the women are definite underlings in comparison to them. The men are described as the alpha dogs while the women are “silly little hens”. The men described in the poem are not seen at all in a good like one is described seducing female workers “Here comes another alpha male--a man's man, a dealmaker, holds tanks of liquor, charms them pants less at lunch:” Even with all the negative light it is clear that in this workplace the men have the power and the women have to comply and agree to what the men say unless they wish for unemployment. The speaker in this poem tells the poem in a tone of someone who has had it with the alpha male dominance in her work place and wants badly to get out of there. It can be best summed up with “Well I think I'm through with the working world, through with warming eggs and being Zenlike in my detachment from all things Ego.”…

In the first six lines of the poem , the speaker describes herself in much detail. Each of her body parts are places with an obvious piece of office equipment. This allows the reader to form a picture of a woman sitting at her desk performing the daily work of a secretary. She does not see herself as a real woman whose hair is “rubber bands,” whose “breast are wells of a mimeograph ink,” and whose “feet bear casters.”…

There are many nicknames for the narrator of the story that in fact take presences over her real name which we don’t learn until later in the story. The nicknames help us to understand whom others perceive her as. A key lesson of the story is that the nicknames help us to understand that beneath that loud voice and confidence is a adolescent who is inexperienced. When she insists that her Grandfather call her Hazel is when we get the affirmation of her identity.…

    Hawaii Wave Surfing

The art of wave riding (‘he'enalu’, in old Hawaiian) was practiced in many coastal locations around the tropics among Pacific Islanders. "He'e" means to go from a solid to a liquid and "nalu" means surfing motion of a wave. This stand-up pastime of surfing came to its climax in Hawaii not only because of its coast having warm water and constant waves but Hawaiians are innately ocean people. Traditionally surfing prowess gained you social rank and power politically in the village. Commoners could only raise their social standing by proving their skills and bravery in the waves on the lower-grade boards they surfed with. The man who was the finest surfer became the Ali’i (royal) of the tribe and so was given a surfboard made from the finest tree. There were surf chants, board making rituals and other native sacred acts. ‘’Hawaiians sang and chanted legendary stories of love matches made and broken in the surf, of lives risked and of heroic ocean deeds by chiefs at the peak of the Sport of Kings’’ (Marcus, 2007)..…
