Healthcare Transparency
According to American College of Physician “ transparency is defined as characterized by visibility or accessibility of information especially concerning business practices and readily understood" (American College of Physician, 2010, p. 3).Transparency when applied to health care focuses on sharing of information and processes. The health care provider needs to disclose the cost of the most common procedures they perform (“Gov. Doyle,” 2010). It will help consumers get price estimates prior to the procedure, make comparisons on prices, and help them determine out-of-pocket costs prior to services needed.
By being more transparent and opening things up to the public healthcare system can lead to a better quality and better patient safety. Hospital executives and experts say’s that one crucial strategy that can be done to improve hospitals and clinics are publicizing patient satisfaction and how they treat their patients (David, 2011). Empowering patients with information on health institutions satisfaction rating, it can prompt public to do self-examination on which doctor and hospital they want to treat them.
Health care transparency in the past has raised multiple questions. In the past, healthcare institution focus on the patient and privacy, but excessive caution on the part of health services threaten its efficacy (George, Milstein & Krughoff, 2011). Patients were not given incentive to make decisions based on the cost of care and information necessary to weigh their options on a particular plan and provider and the out of pocket cost for a particular service needed. Affordable Health Care Act have greatly affect the future of health care transparency in the future (George et. Al, 2011). Patients have more right to information on charges, insurance payments and out-of-pocket costs for the common types of care at hospitals and clinics.
