Health Information Exchange Health information exchange (HIE) allows doctors, nurses, pharmacists, other health care providers and patients to appropriately access and securely share a patient’s vital medical information electronically. The HIE helps to improve the speed, quality, safety and cost of patient care and sharing of patient information. By electronically exchanging information, it can be standardized which can make data transferring seamlessly and can be integrated into the patient’s electronic health record (EHR). “The goal of health information exchange is …show more content…
to facilitate access to and retrieval of clinical data to provide safe, timely, efficient, effective, and equitable patient-centered care,” (“What are health”, 2013). Health information exchange organizations (HIOs) provide healthcare facilities with the means to electronically move clinical information between information systems and maintain the meaning of the information being exchanged. “HIOs also provide the infrastructure for secondary use of clinical data for purposes such as public health, clinical, biomedical, and consumer health informatics research as well as the institution and provider quality assessment and improvement,” (“What are health”, 2013). HIOs are regional (RHIOS), and it facilitates the access and exchange for health information in a geographical area. Washington State implemented their HIE program with OneHealthPort, which was designated to serve as the lead HIE organization for the week.
OneHealthPort
OneHealthPort (OHP) is a health technology management organization that is used by healthcare organizations to streamline and accelerate the exchange of business and clinical information in the Pacific Northwest.
OHP was created in 2002 by a coalition of health plans, hospitals and medical personnel that wanted to build a trusted community where business and clinical information can be shared securely and simply. Healthcare professionals are offered an easy and secure way to access and share information by OHP. It was implemented so that Washington State’s HIE is low cost, accessible, and secure information exchange …show more content…

Importance and Benefits of HIE HIE is important as it gives health professionals the ability to exchange health information electronically, which helps to improve the quality and safety of healthcare. It provides a connecting point for organized and standardized data to be exchanged. It can help with reducing duplication of services and reduce operational costs, both helps to reduce healthcare costs. HIE is also beneficial to health care professionals and the patients. One important benefit is that it provides a secure location for individual physicians and organizations to exchange and maintain EHRs. It also helps to save costs, which is important involved in healthcare. By being able to share and access patient records providers can spot warning signs faster, look at treatment already given, and patient history, which helps improve patient care. HIE is also time saving, secure, organized, and streamlined so that healthcare professionals can do more for their patients. It is both beneficial and important to improving the healthcare systems.
Objectives
Healthcare has to evolve with time and with the change in both technology and economy. Today more people work online then by telephone or other ways to communicate. Technology has changed the way people communicate, keep records, and run businesses. There is an increasing need for healthcare information to be more readily available and easier to use to improve patient care. By using EHRs and HIEs health care professionals are given a way to improve patient care with the use of technology. HIE’s will help healthcare information to be accessed, make sure it is secure, make sure guidelines are followed, and gives healthcare professionals and facilities a way to improve healthcare quality. The advancement in technology have shaped what is now needed in the health care to provide better quality health care to patients. There is always something new out there that will improve all types of businesses including health care. Technology has not only helped patient care but also how health care professionals communicate. By using EHRs and HIEs healh care prifessionals not only can improve health care for their patients but also the relationships between health care professionals, deparments/fields, and different locations.
