Evaluating the implementation of the strategic plan assists the organization to measure effective and non-effective actions and processes (Kansas Department of Health and Environment, 2011). As such, time-sensitive adjustments may be accomplished efficiently and the emphasis would be the outcomes not the actions implemented. Benchmarking uses a specific point of comparison with other organizations, of which is measured against other healthcare organizations. This process allows for the discovery of how the results were accomplished and used as a learning opportunity to implement adjustments (Ettorchi-Tardy, Levif, & Michel, 2012). Benchmarking was initially introduced in 1990 by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO), with the main objective to be a tool for continuous quality improvement and supportive action to change.
