Eating Healthy: A Way of Life

Those who do not know me well are amazed by what they perceive to be a great amount of determination, diligence, and willpower when it comes to my eating habits. My husband, children, and others who do know me well realize it is just the way I am, dedicated and passionate to all things I consider worthwhile. While changing my lifestyle over the last six years to incorporate healthy eating habits, I have gained a tremendous amount of knowledge regarding nutrition. For instance, health conditions like high blood pressure or high cholesterol may be improved and even prevented simply by choosing the proper foods. The likelihood of developing conditions such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and obesity can be drastically reduced with proper nutritional habits. I feel such a sense of accomplishment and confidence when someone asks my opinion about how to eat to address a specific concern or just to promote overall better health. Eating healthy has improved my life and turned into a passion I am pursuing as a career, because I now understand the importance of proper nutrition and how it affects my overall health.

I am always eager to share the information I have garnered and my personal experiences in an insatiable quest to understand how nutrition affects many aspects of health. Numerous attempts at restricting all fats, or all carbohydrates, or a too low daily calorie intake failed. Finally, I developed my own personal way of eating that provides an optimal level of nutrients that works for me. Although no single pattern of eating healthy can be applied to everyone, healthy eating habits can easily be incorporated into individual lifestyles. By beginning to make small changes to incorporate more nutrient dense foods into a daily routine, like limiting soda and drinking more water, or keeping fruit and almonds on hand for snacking instead of potato chips or candy bars, habits can form and be expanded as a new lifestyle of

    Throughout the course of the last nine weeks, my eyes have been opened to an entirely new world full of nutritional and exercising information. It is rough being a thirty-three year old husband and father, with an eye on trying to remain on this planet for as long as humanly possible. As parents, we all have goals we want to achieve.     After assessing my health through an internet tool available on the Council for Responsible Nutrition wellness campaign webpage, I have reached several conclusions and understanding of my current general health status. The health assessment tool on the webpage is called “my wellness score card”.
