Hearing Racial Slurs
Coming from a town where about half of the population is a hispanic or latino minority, I constantly face discrimination. It happens a lot when our sports teams go to other schools to compete and even at our home games. The referees are always managing to make unjust calls against us. Something that not only the players, and parents notice, but even coaches that have come from other school districts have realized. I’ve even experienced hearing racial slurs said to my teammates and I in a football game. Not being the first time, we knew how to handle it and kept a cool mind and just ignored it. It's something that nobody would like to hear but I think that it's important to react the right way. By this I mean being smart about it and not giving
them any reasons to say such things.
Anybody and just about everybody can discriminate each other like that. Especially here in America where the vast majority of the population’s ancestors come from foreign nations, but doing that is just stupid and uneducated. Nobody should feel left out because of our race or ethnicity, not only because we legally have the rights, but also because everyone has something offer for others to learn from. Instead of criticising people for their race or ethnicity, people should realize how lucky we are of having such diversity. This is something very valuable, and should rather learn from each other's backgrounds and cultures. We must take advantage of this opportunity, which is something I am looking forward to as a future duck, knowing that I will be surrounded by diverse students. I'm glad and proud to be a minority and hope to become another unique alumni of such diverse University.
