Another appalling video was Unnatural Causes- Bad Sugar and the Pima and Tohono O’odham Indians of southern Arizona. The Pima and Tohono O’odham Indians have the highest diabetes rates in the world as the video suggested, and almost half of all adults are afflicted by either type one or two diabetes, but strangely, a little over a century ago, diabetes were unheard of or found in the Native Americans there. Many researchers pointed out many factors too why the Pima and Tohono O’odham Indians are unhealthy. While obesity and food diet are the main factors, so is poverty level (Bad Sugar, 2008). Any people in the in the poverty level to lower middle classes are at least twice as likely to become diabetic as those in the upper and high classes,…

In order to investigate this, in the Framingham, the group of people who were found with elevated cholesterol were most likely to be diagnosed with coronary disease and died from it. Ancel Key published the study to compare hear disease and fat consumption, he found that fat intake is associated with heart disease. He collected data from 22 countries and published only those that fits his hypothesis. He stated that eating fat leads to high cholesterol in blood, which in turns cause heart disease. But further research on his study declared his results wrong. Later investigation on the study proved that cholesterol is an essential element for every cells in the body and studies showed that people with high cholesterol in the blood lives longer than the one with lower…

Hi all. Yet another one, which occurred to me that I should do about two weeks ago, when a patient was doing some pretty strange things on the monitor. As usual, please remember that this is not meant to be an official reference, but is supposed to represent the information that a preceptor would pass on to a new orientee in the unit. Please get back to me if things aren’t clear, have been left out, or are just plain wrong, and I’ll fix them up right away. Thanks!…
Dilated cardiomyopathy is a serious condition in which the heart muscle becomes weakened and loses strength to pump blood throughout the body. In an attempt to make up for the loss of blood supply, greater amounts of blood fill the hearts lower chambers. The ventricles expand and, in time, the heart muscle stretches out of shape, or dilates, and becomes even weaker. Most individuals with cardiomyopathy eventually develop heart failure, a condition in which the ventricles are not able to pump enough blood to meet the body's needs for oxygen and nutrients.…
