Select one type of Fossil Fuel (Coal, Petroleum or Natural Gas) and one type of Renewable Energy Resource (Solar power, Wind power, Hydropower, Geothermal power, or Biomass). Fossil Fuel: Coal
Renewable resource: Solar Power
Describe this resource
Coal is nonrenewable resource. Solar Power is a renewable resource.
Advantages of this resource (include at least two)

2. Inexpensive fossil fuel than any other fossil fuel.
1. Solar power is renewable.
2. Solar power creates no pollution.
Disadvantages of this resource (include at least two)
1. Casualties has happen when digging for coal.
2. Pollution problems
1. Solar panels are very expensive.
2. Solar panels are only good when the sun is shinning outside.
How does collecting this resource effect the environment?
1. It cannot be renewed, cause may too much air pollution when burned. 1. Well not give out pollutions, good for everyone.
How does using this resource effect the environment?
1. Air pollution. No harm if left the same way. 1. It gives solar panels electricity. Climates
Compare the cost of both resources. Which is more expensive to create? Which is more expensive to use? 1. Coal is more expensive to build. Coal is less expensive to use. 1. Solar power is the most expensive to use because of the equipment needed. Its simple to create with the sun shinning.
What technology is involved in gathering or using this resource? 1. Mining for the coal. 1. Solar panels for the Solar power of the sun.
How do we use this resource to generate electricity? 1. Coal is burned into fuel then made into electricity. 1. With the solar panel it absorbs the sun rays from the sun and conducts electricity.
What are the potential hazards associated with using and this resource? (include at least two)
1. Harmful for humans because of the pollution the coal gives out.
2. Risk of mining coal.
1. Ultra violet rays on humans.
2. When there is no sun there is no solar power for the electricity.
If this were to be our primary way for generating electricity what effect would this have on individuals and the environment? 1. The affect would be too much pollution for us humans can harm the oceans, lakes, water etc… 1. Too much ultra violet sun rays given of by the sun causing skin cancer.
Conclusion Paragraph
You have studied and researched different forms of renewable and nonrenewable resources. Based on your research and or the information you have leaned in lesson 3.05 and 3.06, what recommendations would you make to local officials regarding the types of resources that could be used to generate electricity? (3-5 detailed sentences)
I would recommend… all the renewable resources. The reason is because it is reusable easy to get and not that expensive. Nonrenewable resources would sometimes be expensive and hard to get. Also, it would cause to much pollution to the humans and to the environments.

2. Select a local or regional alternative energy resource. How might this resource be used to supplement or replace fossil fuels? In North Carolina an alternative energy source is Solar Panels, using the sun to produce power. This could be used initially to supplement fossil fuels and eventually replace them once more research and fact finding is done on the subject of solar energy. We have to know what to expect in different situations as we do with fossil fuels and regular fuels. I am interested as to how a solar panel would work in a state like Alaska where they have days where sunlight is only available for 1 to 2 hours per day for a few months. Will the amount of pollution in the air affect the amount of power that I get since rays are being deflected and not coming through at its full potential?…

Solar energy is what keeps us all alive. The earths temperature is retained from the light and heat taken from the sun. how easily solar energy is converted into light energy is important. The Photovoltaic effect is a process through which the PV cells transfers light into electricity. sunlight is made of photons. these photons contain different amounts of energy. When they strike a PV cell, they reflect, absorb and pass right through. when a photon is absorbed, it turns into electrical energy. This energy is transferred to an electron in the semiconductor. then the escaped electron becomes a part of the electrical circuit which then provides the necessary voltage needed to drive electrical current into a light bulb. We all know that the new technologies will bring us more methods to conserve solar energy into…

Solar power is simply the conversion of energy from the sun into usable energy. Solar energy can be harvested in two ways: indirectly by using the heat of the sun and directly by utilizing its energy to turn it into electricity. What makes solar power so popular is the fact that it can be used anywhere that has sunlight. Solar power can be collected in 3 different ways: solar heat collectors, solar thermal concentrating systems, and photovoltaics. Solar heat collectors are collectors that are designed to absorb the heat from the sun. The most common ones are flat plate collectors that have a dark absorber plate that is covered with a transparent plate (usually glass). In between the two plates are pipes that are filled with heat-transferring liquid like antifreeze. When sunlight strikes the absorber plate in the collector, the heat is absorbed into the liquid, which is then passed through pipes to the water heater. When the liquid is finished being used, it flows back up to the plate where it is heated again and repeats the process. Solar thermal concentrating systems use mirrors and lenses to concentrate the energy of the sun into a small area to produce energy. The energy heats up molten salt in pipes that run along the concentrating system which is the power…

The sun emits far more energy than the world could ever need, but the problem lies in harvesting enough of it. There, so far, exist three different methods of collecting this solar energy. The first method is known as parabola, which is a shiny disk shaped bowl carved at a specific angle to concentrate the energy from the sun to a certain spot in it. This spot that the energy is being focused to contains a black tube filled with water. Naturally, the water becomes heated, which can then be used to create electricity. The second method is known as flat plate, which consists of a layer of glass, space, black metal, and more glass, where the space is filled with water. The sun energy that the black metal absorbs gets transferred to the water, which then becomes heated. This heated water, much like the first method, can then be used to create electricity. Both methods discussed thus…
