Although automobiles had already existed for decades, they were still mostly scarce, expensive, and unreliable at the Model T's introduction in 1908 (Curcio). To get over the huge barrier of overpriced, unreliable cars, Ford priced the Model T at $850, a far cry from the $2,000 cost of most early cars. He also made sure that everything was perfectly safe for families and that it wouldn’t break down when you were driving (Davis). Since the Model T was positioned as reliable, easily maintained, and a mass-market transportation, the Model T was a runaway success (Curcio). It was so successful that 16.5 million Model T’s were sold.…

The Ford Automotive Company began as a vision of its founder Henry Ford. Henry Ford was born in 1863 on a farm near Dearborn, Michigan. In 1890 Ford’s hobby in the engineering field became a career as he began his employment at Detroit Edison Company. In 1892, Ford built his first gasoline buggy in which he sold in 1896 to help fund the construction of a new automobile. Three years later in 1899, Ford was forced to quit despite his promotion to chief engineer because of his hobby outside of work. The loss of his career at Detroit Edison Company did not slow Ford down. Soon after that he started Detroit Automobile Company with the help of some private investors. Shortly after, he withdrew from that business association because of accounting and prices of the cars produced by the company. On June 16, 1903 Henry Ford opened a converted wagon factory on Mack Avenue in Detroit which became known as the Ford Motor Company. After the company was formed it went through ups and down like any other company. The Ford Motor Company fought with the Licensed Association of Automobile Manufacturers over rights for a patent held on road locomotives with internal combustion engines when the company began. The Model T was the beginning mark of Ford’s success being one of its most popular cars in 1908. Ford was also involved in the war effort in World War I. The Ford Motor Company placed its resource at the disposal of the government providing large quantities of automobiles, trucks, ambulances, Liberty airplane motors, Whippet tanks, and Eagle submarine chasers. The Ford Company later expanded into other countries such as England, German, and Russia. The Ford Motor Company has been through many changes in time that include two World Wars, the Great Depression and more.…

Michael O’Neal explains in, America in the 1920’s, that, “Henry Ford’s Model T Automobile helped end isolation of rural life, gave people more personal freedom, and transformed into people constantly on the move” (6). The Model T was a success, and had many people coming forward to buy it. It was used as transportation and sometimes for sport. In Fashions of a Decade the 1920’s, it says, “ auto racing became a popular and spectacular sport while happy family motoring was enjoyed by many” (Herald 6). Henry Ford’s car was used for affordable transportation and was prized for its low cost, durability, versatility and ease of maintenance. The Model T was intended to be “a farmer’s car,” that served the transportation needs of a nation of farmers. There was a demand for basic transportation in the 20’s that the Model T had met tended increasingly to be filled from the backlog of used cars piling up in the dealers’ lots as the market became saturated. Henry Ford stopped making the Model T in…

This shows that Henry Ford dedicated much of his time into building better engines and better vehicles. Since Henry Ford won that race, it lead to eleven other people wanting to invest their money into Henry Ford, and that was when the Ford Motor Company was founded in 1903 (Ford Motor Company Timeline, 2017). According to the article “Ford Motor Company” from Encyclopedia, Britannica, in 1908, only five years after Ford Motor Company had been founded, Ford opened their “first international sales branch in Paris”. In 1910, Henry Ford produced the Model-T, the first car built from an assembly line and sold in mass production. “It had a 20-horsepower, four-cylinder engine, reached a top speed of about 45 miles per hour, covered 13-21 mpg and weighed 544 kg” (“The evolution of the car”). Now, many of us may think that is a horrible car, but just remember, that was over a century ago. The first Model-T was sold for only $850. There were only gasoline motors, so you had to crank it by hand in order for it to start. Cranking was dangerous, if not done right it could fire back and break your hand. Ouch! In 1912, the electric motor had been invented. Around the 1920’s, front wheel drive, four wheel drive, and brakes for all four wheels had come into the big picture. By the mid 1920’s, closed-roof sedans had become more popular. If you compare the Model-T to a newer car, such as a Ford Fusion, it just shows how sophisticated automobiles have become.…
