Henry VIII was king from 1509 to 1547.He was not actually meant to be king in the first place but when he was just 11 his elder brother Arthur died and he automatically took the throne and (because his father wanted to keep the alliance with Spain) a wife (Catherine of Aragon). This, however had to be approved by the Pope and was only approved because Catherine said, although she had been married to Arthur she had never slept with him and so the Pope said that because of that her and Arthur were never properly married and so in 1509 Henry and Catherine were wed (when he was 17)
After around 20 years on the throne cracks were beginning to show in Henry’s marriage, finance and lead. One of which, was that Catherine bore him (after five miscarriages) a girl and he realised that he would never have the male heir he needed from her, and, anyway, at around the time Catherine was having the baby Henry was having an affair with Anne Boylyn. So in 1531 he began trying to get a divorce from Catherine. He fell in love with Anne because of her long black hair and pretty eyes. To get married to Anne he made himself Supreme head of the Church so he could dodge the passage about divorce in the Bible. So, in 1533 they were married but, unfortunately for Henry, this marriage too, went up in flames. Anne bore him another daughter only 3 years after their joyous marriage. Henry had her executed for Adultery. He then proceeded to marry Jane Seymour, he married her because she was a plain and simple girl, and she gave him the boy he needed, but, sadly passed away just 3 days after Edward (their new born baby boy) was born. Henry was heartbroken.
At that time Henry was the most important man in England but he did not own the Church and could not control them. In 1533 (as I have mentioned before) he pronounced himself as head of the church (so that he could have a divorce). When Henry became Head he eased up on taking money from
