Part1: Summary of the movie In a high-tech near future, Theodore who writes beautiful letters for ones with difficulties in expressing their thoughts, is walking through the last stage of his divorce. Introverted Theodore is in limbo after ending the relationship with his long-time love, Catherine. Theodore cannot get satisfied with fulfilling both the sexuality and emotion of the female relationship, he spends his leisure time to play computer games alone and try to get rid of the memories with his ex-wife. Could age, sex, race or even species not taken into the consideration of love? Could we accept a genuine platonic love? If spiritual love transcends the sexual desire, what position that human body would take place in a love relationship? I finally come up with an answer. There is no definition of love and the truth is the thing that we believe. We are free to give interpretations and significance of our love, just like giving meaning of our life. In one of scenes of the movie, Samantha found a woman who was willing to lend her a body to make love with Theodore, and Theodore finally refused. Orson Welles said’ We're born alone, we live alone, we die alone. Only through our love and friendship can we create the illusion for the moment that we're not alone.’ We desire the feeling and needs of belongingness and love. After we met and loved someone, we think we have a certain understanding of love and the way we get along with our lover, however, at the same time, we lose our desire of giving love and being loved by someone. Time makes us have a clear view of our lovers, including both their bright side and dark side. However, most of us forget how to embrace, forgive, accept our lovers in the long-term relationship. It results we are alone again.
Movies and you Life is like a movie. We are all the actors and taking some roles in our life. This course is one of my life scenes, and I am really enjoyed the lecture time that inspired me to interpret the film with different angles of psychoanalysis. I believe movies can make my life complete.
