Heraldry Research Paper

Heraldry, which originated in Europe during the 12th century, is a system of signs and symbols. The original purpose of heraldry was to allow knights to recognize one another on the battlefield. In earlier years, when a battle occurred, knights could not easily distinguish who their enemies were. In order to solve this problem, knights began decorating their shields with different colors, metals, furs, and symbols to identify themselves. There are many rules in heraldry. A few of the more basic rules include, never placing a metal on a metal, never placing a colour on a colour, always placing a metal on a colour or vice versa, and using furs in place of a metal or a colour.
