In Company Q’s case some business decisions need to be re-analyzed in order to ensure they are meeting their goals, as well as being socially responsible. Company Q is a small locally owned Company that has decided to close down stores in higher-crime-rate areas of the city due to the stores reportedly losing money. Another issue is that it took many years of insisting by the customers to get health-conscience and organic goods in due to worries by the company about high cost margins. They have also turned down opportunities to donate day-old products to the local food banks because they are worried about lost revenues and fraud. The current attituds and decisions seem to be based on the bottom line and profitability of the company rather than the best interests of the community and their customers. In fact, the company demonstrates distrust of its employees and a lack of empathy for patrons of the food bank in justifying its response. Everyone remembers going around as a child for one night of the year dressed up as his or her favorite ghoul or storybook character and returning home with a sack full of delicious candies. There were always a variety of candy types, but most of these candies were usually made by two of the major companies in the industry. The Hershey Company and the Tootsie Roll Company were both well represented on this night. Both companies made so many different types of candies for young children to enjoy that the names would forever be imbedded in their minds. We often hear in the news today stories of food deserts across our nation where healthy affordable food is difficult to obtain. The First Lady even started a program to try and help bring grocers back into urban low income areas. If the Grocer in question would have acted as good corporate citizens they may have been able to address the following issues and possibly prevented the closing of their stores. Company Q could have contributed to the disadvantaged hungry people of their community through the services of the food bank all while improving public relations with their community and employees. It is also possible they could have increased profits by engaging customers and responding to their feedback and requests in a timely manner. Taking these simple steps could have had a positive impact on their community and success and profitability of their business.…

Hershey’s specifically targets their products to mothers, and for a good reason. Hershey’s believes that mothers determine their children(s) tastes in candy from an early age. If Hershey’s can successfully target mothers who buy their products, then their children will grow up eating Hershey’s. Therefore, when these children grow older the Hershey’s brand will be embedded in them, making them more apt to continue buying the Hershey’s brand products. Peter & Olson (2010) also explain that research has proven that 55% of candy sold is purchased by adults. This makes the majority of candy intake through adults and not children.
