It was the beginning of my second season on my high school tennis varsity team, a new coach had just joined the team and to my surprise he was one of the english teachers at our school. At the time our coach seemed very friendly and funny as he presented himself to the team. Little did I know about the problems that would soon arise. …show more content…
During the start of our first match, a couple of our teammates were running late because their teacher had excused them late of class.
As we notified our opponent's school coach about the situation, he kindly accepted it and was willing to wait. However, in response our coach simply told their coach to disqualify the match and when our teammates finally arrived he kicked them out of the team immediately without even allowing to explain themselves. I then suggested our teammates to write an apology letter to the coach explaining the situation and they agreed. When the time came to give the letter to our coach, the rest of the team came by in support of their apology. Although, our coach accepted their apology and allowed them back on the team, he took their apology letter and posted on the whiteboard right in front of his classroom. His reason to do this was to make this as a reminder to the team of what could happen if anyone of us came late to a match, but in my eyes and the rest of the team, we saw it as embarrassment to our teammates who worked hours on end to write the letter. As we all looked at each other, we knew this wasn’t the time to voice our
opinion.
As the season progressed things became worse as our coach began to constantly use sarcasm against our team for no reason, but to demeanor us. Not allowing our friends, private coaches, nor family to support us during our matches. But worst of all, he again threaten to either kick us off the team or write a referral to the principle about our “misbehavior”. At one point, he even kicked one our alumni, who was helping us practice, off the court just because he didn’t get permission to hit with us. As the season approached it’s end, most of us were ready to quit the team, as were fed up about his treatment towards the team even after talking to him in person. However, I didn’t want the hours we spent practicing aiming to be the best in the district and the bonds we made over the years to break apart.
I knew things had to change if the team was going to stay intact. At the end of the season, I decided to have a meeting without the coach to talk about the situation and we led to conclude that the coach needed to respect us as a team or a replacement needed to happen. The following week, we all decided to get our parents involved to talk to the coach and the principal for a change. But the following season the situation continued. At that point, we took the situation further by writing a letter to the athletic director of the district with all of our signatures present for a replacement coach. Although we were able to get a new coach, it was my last year on the team and I wished thing could have changed earlier. In the end, I was glad I was able to leave the team knowing their future is going to be bright.
