First thing i considered looking at was if the schools offered my major of communications and see the gpa required in order to get it in. I believed this to be the most important because even if I found the school that perfect for me …show more content…
without the proper transfer requirements, it would mean nothing. EastBay and Davis required the same amount of transferable units. Saint Mary's College only requires 23 units to transfer. I thought that was important to as it would allow me to transfer this year if i selected Saint Marys but i would need to wait another year for the other schools.
The first School out of the 3 i looked at for my major was EastBay.
Cal State East Bay provides my Communication major with media production option. It liked this option because of the versatile career possibilities that were also listed on the website. Careers ranged business executive to personal trainer. I found it important to have a wide variety of career possibilities so you can have multiple chances to see whats right for you. Eastbays gpa requirements is a 2.0 gpa with 60 transferable units.
The next schools requirements i looked at was UC Davis. Davis provides a Communications Major with a study abroad feature. Not say that is something I would like of pursuing but i thought that was great for students. Also on the website they give you the contact to the Communications Major advisor which is a good outlet to have in case you have questions about before you transfer or even while you're there. Unlike Eastbay, Davis does not provide a list of possible career opportunities but does give a statement. Davis requires a 2.4 gpa also with 60 transferable
units.
The last school Saint Mary's College of California also provides my major through their school of liberal arts. What i like about Saint Mary's is there communication major provides internship opportunities within the major. They even give a list of the partnered business that offer them.Saint Marys seemed to have more opportunities right away in there communication department then the other schools but they require you complete COMM 196 for the major, in which the other schools don't require. As i said before Saint Mary's only requires 23 units to transfer with a 2.0 gpa.
Next i looked at how much it would cost to go to each school. To do that though i would have to consider the location of the schools. Saint Mary's College is located in Moraga and East Bay is located in Hayward. If i were to transfer to one of those 2 school i could still live at home and commute to school with could possibly save me a lot of money. Uc Davis is located in Davis, which is closer to Sacramento and about a 2-3 hour drive. Considering that i would likely have to live on campus or find an apartment near campus. Location of a school is a big contributing factor when it comes to expenses and i had to consider the location of all three schools before i went into further analysis of their individual cost.
As it is the farthest i looked at the expenses for UC Davis first. According to there site annual tuition for Davis is $14,046. Books and supplies are around 1600 dollars. There biggest difference is where you decide to live on campus or not. Students who live on campus will have to pay around 14,800 dollars for room and board. That's around $30,000 not including your personal expenses. Living off campus expenses can vary depending on the living situation and agreements. That saying personal and transportation expenses i'll probably be higher but i don't know if they would amount to an additional 14,000. They provide financial aid but in short, it seems most money will come from your pocket or grants.
The next school i looked at was Saint Marys. What i found interesting about them was that there tuition varied based on whether you were a full time student or part time. If you are a full time student tuition is around $44,200. A part- time student, which is taking less than 7 courses a year will only pay about 5,500 for tuition. This is a possible option to look at if being a full time student is too expensive. This also leaves opportunity to work a part time job since i will still be commuting from home if i were to go here. Saint Marys provides Financial aid but there website had little information in regarding to such.
The last school Cal State East Bay with is the closest school to my location also didn't provide much information about financial Aid. UC Davis provides a lot more information in regards to student expenses such as dorm, transportation, and books while the others 2 don't. One thing east bay doesn't provide is tuition amounts from undergraduate all the way up to doctorate which is a good tool for the future. The undergraduate annual tuition for a full time student is around $6500. Other than that there isn't much more information provided but i would assume i would need money for books and transportation. Eastbay is clearly the best choice financially as it is close to home and also provides financial aid if i qualify.
Lastly i looked at the multicultural impacts of each 3 individual schools. Eastbay which is a school i am already familiar with has a very diverse population from my experiences there. Since it is so centralized in one of the major bay area cities, a lot of the common bay area culture can be found at the school. I know eastbay holds several festivals free for students where musicians come and perform. They even have an app that you can download to keep up with all the upcoming events and even offers rewards for participation. I think EastBay has a great way of getting students involved with their fellows peers by providing events all walks of life can enjoy.
Saint Marys didn't have much information on student life and such which is expected as it is a Catholic School. They do provide insight on Lasallian traditions for those interested. They do have good basketball team which has made strives in national play in the last few years. On the other hand UC Davis really intrigued me with their student life. Not only do they have great sports teams they provide great multicultural experiences for students. Since the 1960s Davis has provided a program called culture days, where they dedicate different days to different ethnic groups and hold events for students hold want to learn more or or just share culture. They hold more than 100 performing arts events each year such as concerts and students get to at a discounted price. I think Davis has a great student life program that can make even someone from outside the Sacramento area feel more comfortable.
After accessing all the information I gathered, this is the conclusion that I came to. Though there are many contributing factors I have to look at when choosing which school is best for me, the two mains criteria are major/gpa and expenses. No matter how much I like a school if they don't have my major or im unable to meet gpa requirements it means nothing. Finding the most affordable option is so important as being comfortable is key in order to focus on coursework. East Bay seems to be the overall best option for me as they provide my major with bonuses and is more affordable than the other options. I believe UC Davis and Saint Marys provide better internship and career readiness opportunities but lack in other areas where East Bay doesn't, such as location. This also allows me to remain near family and friends for support. Ultimately Cal State East Bay outmatched the the categories of most importance to myself which is why i believe it is the best school for me.
