The culture of hip-hop has impact and influence on millions of people. It is this way because not only is a genre of music, but a way of life. It is a style, a way to express, and a way to carry themselves. With the many positives of hip-hop culture there is always ones seeking to present the culture as a negative. Hip-hop is a culture which is constantly changing and evolving. Overtime the culture started from streets of New York, then across the United States, and reached global. The new generation of hip-hop has a different creative style from the older generations of hip-hop and that will continue to change. With these changes there will always be the history of the culture, dating back to the 1970s in New York. The East Coast vs West Coast hip-hop culture will always be relevant with the history.

1520 Sedgwick Avenue, Bronx New York is the birthplace of hip-hop. On August 11, 1973 a sister of DJ Kool Herc was hosting a back to school party. Herc was entertaining the party and he decided to try something new. He extended an instrumental beat to let people dance longer and began MC’ing during the extended breakdancing (Zuberi). The extension of the instrumental beat was the start of scratching. Scratching is the moving of a vinyl record back and forth on a turntable to create rhythmic sounds and and sound effects.
