POW! My head jerked forward as a jolt of pain shot down my back!

It was the summer of 2013, I was really tired having to wake up early for dance class, but I knew as soon as I got into the studio I would have a lot of energy, seeing my friends. I had hip-hop first, then I had a short break and I had convinced my mom that we should run through McDonalds in that break time.

After hip-hop class was over I went to the parking lot and found my mom's car. I hopped in and she drove me to a McDonalds by an intersection and we got in line for the drive through. I got a six count meal with a dr.pepper like always. Quickly we pulled onto the intersection the first chance we got because it was busy. Tired of the wait at the red light, I decided

I remember the one day, it was early in the morning and I was going to my basketball game. We stopped to help this lady get home by giving her a ride. Then once we dropped the lady off at her house we drove off and had to stop for some deer to cross the road. Once the deer crossed the road, we were finally off to the game, we made it to the game with time to spare. With the time we had to spare I had some biscuits and gravy, and i devoured them in seconds and had some orange juice after.…

Everything stopped, everything a statue all around me. frozen in time. or at least that’s how it felt. I looked around, people staring at me, waiting. I wanted to talk but I couldn't say anything. I felt lost. I could only remember how this all came to be. It was a Monday morning, I’m walking to class, mumbling freestyle raps to myself. As I walk, I accidentally bump into a group of guys, falling as I turn to see them laughing. “Come on, Biggie Smalls! You should watch your step,” One of them said as I stood up, noticing them all start surrounding me. “Let's see if lil’ B.I.G. here can actually spit.” The same guy who I bumped into said, rolling up his sleeves. I could tell he’s the main one considering how the others follow him around.…

That’s interesting you’ve mentioned not to attend the hospital and funeral for your grandmother. In my African American/Indian culture if a woman is pregnant she’s prohibited to attend anywhere the death angel may currently be around, and funerals are definitely off limits. My family used to say when a life is taken a new life is born and I don’t know if the pregnant thing was an old superstation by forbidden spirit in my family as well because they believed the death angel comes to take a life in three; therefore it permits the baby a chance at life. Nowadays, there’s wills and other things in place to carry out a person’s wishes. I believe she told you because she knew she could trust you to carry out her last wishes amongst the family accordingly.…

I lived in a small town named Harlem, and it was nice in the summer, but it ends up getting too hot in the summers. Most people here are people hanging out windows, people on fire escapes, and anywhere trying to get a cool breeze. Harlem was a town that you could get a job for a day and that's it pretty much it. I loved playing the saxophone, so I tried to use that to get money but it didn't work as well as I planned. My dad says I should get a part-time job, but I wanted full time to get extra money. I finally got a job at this business and I finally thought it would have been great. Then after awhile, it started to get harder to wake up and get to work. Then I meet Fats and that's when everything went south. Fats was someone that had a bootleg…

A life in the ghetto is no life at all. Especially in Molesville, Pennsylvania, a town left in the dust by modern society. Ever since I can remember my mother has been sick, this terrible place is the cause. With little sanitation the streets are rat infested and the poor die young. We had not had enough money, when my father left us, to afford food to live with, let alone go get help from a doctor. After my mother’s pregnancies she gradually became more and more sick. I thought my mother was in pain from the way she sat on her bed constantly crying. That theory was proven one day when her will to fight died. She transformed into a being of hatred. Her heart turned as black as the night. She was different, the mother I once knew dead. Although I knew she was still there, deep, deep down waiting for me to rescue her from herself. In almost an instant I decided the only way to save her was to earn the money for…

s an anthropologist, I have studied many races, ethnic groups, and cultures, even subcultures of the American Africans of North America. There are many subcultures in their ethnicity and the one that stuck out to me over the years is their ritualistic holiday. Their holy day, is not like any other days I have come across. It’s every week and takes up more than twelve hours of the day.…

I am the problem in the black community: I am unplanned pregnancy, educational malpractice, welfare - shared and borrowed EBT, stolen uniforms in exchange for street opium, the overdose and the uncomfortable pain of going cold turkey. I am ghetto life, extreme poverty, gun violence and genocide in the streets. A piece of me lie motionless in a yellow square reading crime scene on a square block that inherits the plight of failed urban development and public policy. A St.Michael’s prayer card is suppose to protect me from bullets; superstition amalgamated with pious belief. Not knowing any other reality, I would casually brush my teeth with baking soda and rags preparing for bed. In my sleep, I would dream of being the pipeline to prison…

For my breaking a social norm, my friends and I wanted to do something creative that no one in my class would do. So in a couple of minutes of thinking we figure something creative. Our plan was to go to McDonalds and use the drive thru to order our order, but the catch is that I was supposed to walk to the drive thru with no car just me standing there ordering my order and when they said to pull up to the next widow I would just walk to the window and pay and walk to the other window to get my order. We did this after the homecoming dance around like 10:40. So I basically I got of the car I started walking to the drive thru and I was basically stuck in traffic. I got behind this black ford SUV and I waited for my turn. So finally it was my turn and I order everything on the dollar menu. But my friends also told me to say “god damn!” while I order something. So I sounded like this “can I get a goddamn McChicken” So the guy said please drive up to the next window and I started walking. When I got there you should’ve seen his reaction like he was expecting a car not a guy walking to the drive thru. He didn’t say anything he just gave me change back and I started walking to the next window to pick up my order.…

It had been a crazy morning as I ran all over my house trying to find my jacket and boots. My mom had been admitted into the hospital that morning for a massive headache and all I could think about was whether or not she would be okay. I took her to the emergency room that day before so going to class was the last thing on my mind. My father and sister had agreed to stay with her till I ended class so I was more at ease knowing she wouldn’t be alone. After running all over my house looking for my things I quickly gathered myself to make my train. I finally got to Penn Station with four minutes to spare. I quickly walked to where the rest of my class was as we waited for instructions to where we would…
