The word first in the Greek is Proton, meaning, first in rank, order, and first in influence and time.

First does not mean better than any other gift but it indicates an anointing to break out of the old order and into the new.

In Biblical times, gates were guarded by solders who opened and closed the gates.

It was at the gates of the city where judgements were pronounced, and justice was administered for the citizens of that city.

Gates represent authority, where decisions are made.

Ruth 4:11 (KJV)
“And all the people that were in the gate, and the elders, said, We are witnesses. The Lord make the woman that is come into thine house like Rachel and like Leah, which two did build the house of Israel: and do thou worthily in Ephratah, and be famous in Bethlehem:”

We are now to rule at the gates of our city (spiritual gates, not literal gates).

Also at the gates, business transactions were made and social problems resolved by city elders.

Elders sat at the gates to administer judicial and social affairs within the city.

Please notice, Jesus said “gates”, there is more than one gate at a city.

In the days of Nehemiah, gate keepers were called judges or magistrates. They examined everything that went in and out of the city.

In these many dedicated temples and pyramids human sacrifice would take place. In numerous primary accounts we are exposed to the barbaric nature and scale in which human sacrifice was practiced, one Spanish account recalls the nature of the sacrifice, “ We saw the men being dragged up the steps, to be sacrificed. The priests laid them down on their backs and cutting open their chests, drew out their palpitating hearts, which they offered to the idols before them, then they flung the bodies down the steps”, here we are given an insight into the connection these people felt towards the gods, through the height of the pyramid and the appreciation of their idols, as well as the unprecedented scale in which human sacrifice was…

This mission reminds us that for the Kingdom of God to continue to break in, individual lives need to be changed, while being motivated and equipped for transformation. Our Book of Discipline offers this cue: “God has used our church to save persons, heal relationships, transform social structures, and spread scriptural holiness, thereby changing the world.” When we change lives and introduce people to the all-loving nature of God, we indeed transform the world. When making disciples, the Church welcomes people into community, educates them on God’s call for Christians, and equips them toward using their spiritual gifts to serve as change agents playing a role in bringing about the Kingdom of…

According to C.E. Autrey, “Old Testament evangelism was largely a matter of revivals; there were no personal efforts on the part of anyone to win converts.”25 The author believed, Old Testament revivals were not revivals in the sense, in which today’s communities view them. Autrey proclaimed, the spiritual revivals in the history of Judah and Israel, during the times of the Old Testament’s prophets, kings, patriarchs, and scribes, were at an all-time decline constantly.26 On the other hand, according Autrey, the New Testament demonstrated a full approach to an evangelistic ministry.27 He continued, “The Apostle Paul and many of the other apostles, used writing, as well as mass and personal evangelism, to further spiritual conquest.”28…
