Tekakis discussion on Thomas jeffersons racial views
author assumes that if Thomas jeffersons home reveals his love of learning it also reveals his attatchment to enlightment ideals because he prominently displayed the bists of such enlightment thinkers such as john locke, isaan newton, and Voltaire. Like other 18 century intellectuals, Jefferson believed that the universe was orderly and balanced, and that it operated according to certain “natural laws”(pg. 115)
author also believes his home reflects jefferon to be republican ideal of virtuous independence. Tekakis says that Jefferson believed citizens with high moral standards was necessary to maintain republican gov. believed such citizens where property owners who supported themselves through labor.
(pg. 116 paragraph 1)Slaves provided the means to live according to enlightenment and republican ideals.
(pg. 116. Paragraph 2)Jefferson saw both groups Indians and balcks through the same lense of enlightenment thought and republican ideology. Thus, he subjected both to empirical analysis as he pondered whether either was capable of fitting into an orderly republican society of rational, self-restrained(disciplined), and independent citizens.
Given jeffersons 18th century outlook, the prospects for either group would seem bleak, for in his mind black slaves were complete dependents and Indians completely undisciplined.
