Historical Perspective Essay Nursing has been and will always be an evolving discipline. From Florence Nightingale, to modern day, nursing has evolved to be what it is today because of the efforts made through research. Nursing research has contributed greatly to the practice and standards of nursing. Nursing research was not always as popular and accepted as it is today. According to "Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing" (2013), "Our mission is to support the learning, knowledge and professional development of nurses committed to making a difference in health worldwide” (STTI Organizational Fact Sheet). Sigma Theta Tau stands behind its mission and was the first organization to take the initiative toward nursing research. I believe back in 1936, the boldness of Sigma Theta Tau to give Alice Malone a grant for research, helped create the foundation for research. This event established the view and importance of ongoing nursing research in health care outcomes. A paradigm is a world view, a general perspective on the complexities of the world. Paradigms for human inquiry are often characterized in terms of the ways in which they respond to basic philosophical questions (Polit & Beck, 2012). Without Sigma Theta Tau giving Alice Malone a grant for research when they did, I do not think that the nursing paradigms would exist as they do today.
