History and Comparison of Windows, Linux, and Apple Operating Systems
By: Noelle

An operating system is a set of programs containing instructions that work together to coordinate all the activities among computer hardware resources. Most operating systems perform similar functions that include starting and shutting down a computer, providing a user interface, managing programs, managing memory, coordinating tasks, configuring devices, establishing an Internet connection, monitoring performance, providing file management and other utilities, and automatically updating itself and certain utility programs (Shelly p. 398). There are three major operating systems that exist today that are going to be compared to decide which operating system could be best for different user purposes. The three operating systems are Windows, Linux, and Apple. Windows operating system is developed and maintained by Microsoft in Seattle, WA. The Microsoft Company was developed by Bill Gates. The first version of the Windows operating system was released in 1985, and has been the leading operating system used by 90% of users (Satyam). It is used by the Server 2008 R2 (Satyam). Windows is a Graphical User Interface (GUI) which allows its users to manage files and run software programs easily on desktop and laptop computers (Satyam). On the desktop, icons are used to represent programs that are easy to find and can be clicked to easily access and run the program of choice. Windows also has a great reputation for its high and efficient security. Some popular Windows editions are Win 98, Win 2000, Win Me, Windows NT, Windows CE, Win 2003, Win XP, Win Vista and Windows 7 (Satyam). Windows 8 is now the new successor of Windows 7 and is now available. Linux (Linus’ Unix) is a leading server operating system,

They are what enable you to interface with the computer to complete tasks. Without an operating system, you really wouldn’t have much use for a computer. Operating systems give you access to so many aspects of the computer. From the OS you can control outside devices like printers and scanners. You can also send output and recognize input to the computer. One other purpose for operating systems is file management.…

Microsoft was formed in 1975 by a university drop out in his junior year called Bill Gates. Bill Gates has been successful to achieve the company’s vision, “we want PC on every desk in every home and office”. Microsoft which is a massive company today was only a small company in 1983. It headquarters contained only a small building next to the Burgermaster in Bellevue and another in Seattle suburb. Microsoft was mainly recognized as the producer of BASIC programs for many systems, and of MS-DOS, an operating system which it sold to IBM. To solve this issue Microsoft was spending heavily on windows called “interface manager”. The success of entire company was depending on the success of this project. The invention of windows made computers possible to be compatible with each other and the invention opened the doors for Microsoft. To understand three operating systems, you must first know what an operating system is. An operating system is software that controls the computer. It manages hardware, run applications, provides’ an interface for uses, stores, retrieves files. Here are three operating systems DOS, Windows 2000, and Linux. DOS, which is a disk operating system was the first OS within IBM computers. DOS was the operating system utilized by early versions of Windows including Windows 3.1 and 3.11. Next you have Windows 2000, which is an upgraded version of Windows NT and comes in numerous versions some are designed for the desktop and other designed high-end servers. Windows 2000 was a popular choice for corporate offices and their employees. The ultimate reason Windows 2000 was so successful over Windows NT was because it was more stable, support for Plug and Play, device manager, recovery console, activity directory, and better network support. At this time Windows 2000 is a dying operating system and provides no support from Microsoft due to the newer operating systems coming out at this time. The third operating system would be Linux is predominantly used for servers. Between Windows, and Mac, Linux is not a high option and is actually one to two percent of the desktop market. The creation of Linux was one of the best examples for free and open source software collaborations. Linux is packaged in a format known as Linux distribution for desktop and server use.…
