Computing hardware evolved from machines that needed separate manual action to perform each arithmetic operation, to punched card machines, and then to stored-program computers. The history of stored-program computers relates first to computer architecture, that is, the organization of the units to perform input and output, to store data and to operate as an integrated mechanism.
Before the development of the general-purpose computer, most calculations were done by humans. Mechanical tools to help humans with digital calculations were then called "calculating machines", by proprietary names, or even as they are now, calculators. It was those humans who used the machines who were then called computers. Aside from written numerals, the first aids to computation were purely mechanical devices which required the operator to set up the initial values of an elementary arithmetic operation, then manipulate the device to obtain the result. A sophisticated (and comparatively recent) example is the slide rule in which numbers are represented as lengths on a logarithmic scale and computation is performed by setting a cursor and aligning sliding scales, thus adding those lengths. Numbers could be

During the fifty odd years since 1960, the world has dramatically changed. The map of countries has changed entirely, the list of allies of various countries has changed. Dictatorships have come and gone, repeatedly in some areas. However, throughout all of the turmoil globally, one thing has remained constant, and that is the rapid advance in computer technology. Throughout history, we have come from computers as large as a warehouse to computers that fit on our wrists, from computers that are massive to launch a moon mission to having that same power in our smartphones.…

In 1944 the very first electronic- mechanical computer called MARK 1 was created at Harvard. This machine was a massive calculator that was fifty one feet wide and eight feet tall (Chee, 1997). The beginning of the smaller computers that we know today started in 1959 when Honeywell developed the first computers that used transistors. These were followed by IBM who used integrated circuits. The very first personal computers were built in the 1970’s with the computers that are recognizable today starting in 1974 with…

Computer Hardware originated from the 1960’s is marked by the conversion from vacuum tube to solid state devices such as the transistor and later the integrated circuit. By 1959 discrete transistors were considered sufficiently reliable and economical that they made further vacuum tube computers uncompetitive. Computer main memory slowly moved away from magnetic core memory devices to solid-state static and dynamic semiconductor memory, which greatly reduced the cost, size and power consumption of computer devices. Eventually the cost of integrated circuit devices became low enough that home computers and personal computers became widespread. In the third generation the mass increase in the use of computers accelerated with computers. These generally relied on Jack Kilby’s invention of the microchip, starting around 1965. However, the IBM Systems used hybrid circuits, which were solid state devices interconnected on a substrate with separate wires. The first integrated circuit was produced in September 1958 but computers using them didn’t begin to appear until 1963. Some of the early uses were in embedded systems, notably used by NASA for the Apollo Guidance Computer and others. While large mainframe computers such as the System increased storage and processing abilities, the integrated circuit also allowed development of much smaller computers. The minicomputer was a significant innovation in the 1960s and 1970s. It brought computing power to more people, not only through more convenient physical size but also…

Once upon a time, way back when in the caveman era, caveman used drawings on walls to keep track of information and to communicate with each other in the clan of one 's life-span. Over time, man have improved and evolved in the way of keeping track of information and communicating with one another. Today, one finds himself more in an automated world than he did 25 years ago. When planning to purchase a computer, one must take in consideration all possibilities, options, and accessories that one could receive along with the computer. In this summary, we are going to examine some of the input, output, and storage devices along with speeds of a computer. You did a good job of getting the reader 's attention and giving the reader a "road map" to your paper.…

In fact, the first computers were people! That is, electronic computers (and the earlier mechanical computers) were given this name because they performed the work that had previously been assigned to people. "Computer" was originally a job title: it was used to describe those human beings (predominantly women) whose job it was to perform the repetitive calculations required to compute such things as navigational tables, tide charts, and planetary positions for astronomical almanacs. Then the abacus, logarithms, Napier's Bones, slide rule, calculating clock, Pascaline, stepped reckoner, punched cards, Difference Engine, Analytic Engine, and so many fascinating machines were produced one by one.[1]…
