History of Film
Plays and dances had elements common to films- scripts, sets, lighting, costumes, production, direction, actors, audiences, storyboards, and scores. They preceded film by thousands of years. Much terminology later used in film theory and criticism applied, such as mise en scène. Moving visual images and sounds were not recorded for replaying as in film.

The camera obscura was pioneered by Alhazen in his Book of Optics (1021),[2][3][4] and was later perfected near the year 1600 by Giambattista della Porta. Light is inverted through a small hole or lens from outside, and projected onto a surface or screen, creating a projected moving image, indistinguishable from a projected high quality film to an audience, but it is not preserved in a recording.

In 1739 and 1748, David Hume published Treatise of Human Nature and An Enquiry concerning Human Understanding, arguing for the associations and causes of ideas with visual images, in some sense forerunners to the language of film.

Moving images were produced on revolving drums and disks in the 1830s with independent invention by Simon von Stampfer (Stroboscope) in Austria, Joseph Plateau (Phenakistoscope) in Belgium and William Horner (zoetrope) in Britain.

In 1877, under the sponsorship of Leland Stanford, Eadweard Muybridge successfully photographed a horse named "Sallie Gardner" in fast motion using a series of 24 stereoscopic cameras. The experiment took place on June 11 at the Palo Alto farm in California with the press present. The purpose of the exercise was to determine whether a running horse ever had all four legs lifted off the ground at once. The cameras were arranged along a track parallel to the horse 's, and each of the camera shutters was controlled by a trip wire which was triggered by the horse 's hooves. They were 21 inches apart to cover the 20 feet taken by the horse stride, taking pictures at one thousandth of a second.[5]

    As defined in Marilyn Stokstad's Art History, the camera obscura is an early developed camera-like device used mostly in the Renaissance. Later it would be used widely for recording images from nature. Construction and operation of the camera was fairly simple: beginning with a dark room or box, a hole would allow light in from one side of the room. The camera then operates by flashing a bright light through the opening (and occasionally passing through a lens). An inverted image of an object from outside of the camera would then be cast onto the inside wall of the box or room allowing the operator to duplicate the exact image being projected (11).     The first true pioneers were the Lumiére bro’s the sons of a famous portrait painter Antoine Lumiére from the 1800s. Their father then opened a company which produced photographic equipment with his sons as his employees. While working the two brothers then discovered the ‘Dry plate’ process of photography in 1881 at the young age of 17. This in turn boosted their father’s company massively and by 1894 they were producing around 15 million plates a year for the company. Due to this popularity Antoine was invited to a demonstration of Edison’s Peephole Kinescope in Paris. A kinescope is a device that allowed people to view pictures on a moving speal to give the illusion that it is moving similar flip books that people use to make animation. Antoine then brought some Kinescope film for his sons, and told them to reproduce this into something great, as producers wanted to make films in France. The brothers than began development of the kinescope in the winter, 1894. However after many months of trying to replicate the device the brothers realised There was too many issues with Edison’ Kinescope that had to be solved for example the camera being too bulky and heavy and the fact that it could only be viewed by one person at a time.     Alhazen (Ibn Al-Haytham), a great authority on optics in the middle ages who lived around 1000 Ad, invented the first pinhole camera. The first casual reference to the optic laws of pinhole cameras was by Aristotle around 330 BC, who questioned why the sun would make a circular image when it shined through a square hole. On a summer day in 1827, Joseph Nicephore Niepce made the first photographic image with a camera obscura. Before that people only used it for viewing and or drawing purposes.
