Abstract
The following paper will be a reflection on the history of intellectual disabilities. It will reflect on the progression of events and analyze them. The analysis will be on the implications of intellectual disabilities in social, economic, and political conditions. Reflection will also take place on how and why the attitudes or treatments of students with intellectual disabilities has differed throughout history. The paper will define how historically the treatment and the education of students with intellectual disabilities has developed into the current existing legal mandates and provisions for students with intellectual disabilities.
Let’s take a look at the history of intellectual disabilities. In the 1500’s and before people that had disabilities or mental illness were looked at as being possessed by the Devil or a sinner. They were often burned at the stake, tortured, and left to die. This was purely based on religious beliefs. During this time people needed a reason for the unexplained so they could try to wrap their heads around why this was happening to a person or themselves.
