Mughal and Safavid were a few of the strongest empires in their time. These empires shared many similarities, but one major similarity is their political structures. The Safavid and Mughal both had a centralized government, based on military conquest, and were both Muslim based empires. But like many things these two empires do have differences, they were both in different regions, overall population was different, and the branch of Islam they followed was separate.…
Throughout the semester our class has been opened up to experiencing the Vancouver Bhangra Community. Bhangra is a folk dance that originated in Punjab but started in Vancouver during the 1970’s and usually was performed with half guys and half girls, however the girls were Caucasian. Also, in Vancouver around the same time when there were labor rights strikes the Dhol become really popular because it was used in the strikes to receive fair wages. The 70’s and 80’s were when the Bhangra scene in Vancouver was blossoming and creating an identity for itself; However, it was a male dominated dance form with very little involvement from females. Even in the 90’s female Bhangra dancers were only on coed teams until the first all girls team in Vancouver, the UBC Girls Bhangra team in 2002. After hearing experiences from the UBC Girls team it was clear to see the change in the overall involvement of girls in the Bhangra competitive area. At first the UBC girls were not seen as equal to the male teams because Bhangra was considered a male dance form and even judges would tell them that they were not as the same level as the males because there were girls and could not perform in a manly enough way. They were also told it was inappropriate for girls to dance in such a manner but the UBC girls didn’t let that stop them. They continued on to dance regardless of the criticism they were getting and actually went on to win many first places, even at Vancouver International Bhangra in 2005, 2006 &2007. The culture behind Bhangra is one of a conservative nature and any change usually takes a while but as we can see after the UBC girls more and more girls are freely joining Bhangra teams and even competing. The negative stigma that was behind girls in Bhangra is slowly going away to make it a more accepting dance form for males and females.…

Conceived as both an instrument of propaganda and of an earthly replica of the house of Mumtaz in paradise, the Taj Mahal is considered one of the most beautiful and symbolic buildings in the world. It is the finest examples of Mughal architecture, a style that merges elements from Persian, Islamic and Indian architectural styles, and a style that greatly influenced the Hindu community. Throughout history, the origins and sources that were used for the design of the Taj Mahal and the effect that the Mughals had in India over architecture, has been of argument. I examine such views to suggest the direct and indirect sources of influence for both the style and design of the Taj Mahal.…

The first people was thought to have reached India from Africa in 40,000 BC. The first civilization started out as hunters and gatherers. Around 4000 BC the Indians started farming. The Indians then moved near the Indus River Valley where they started using irrigation and started building their first cities. The Indians built two main cities that we know of Harappa and Mohenjo-Daro. Both cities are currently located in current Pakistan. The first Indian buildings and houses were built out of stone and were built two to three stories high and they had sewage systems. The Indians built there structures with bronze tools. They learned how to make bronze tools from the Sumerians. The Indians wrote hieroglyphs, same as the ancient Egyptians. By 2000 BC the Harappan civilization had collapsedThe earliest buildings in India were built by the Harappan people the Indus River Valley, in about 2500 BC. Their buildings included high brick walls around their cities to keep out enemies. Among India's ancient architectural remains, the most characteristic are the temples, Chaityas, Viharas, Stupas and other religious structures. The distinct architectural style of temple construction in different parts was a result of geographical, climatic, ethnic, racial, historical and linguistic diversities.Taj Mahal is regarded as one of the eight wonders of the world. It was built by the Muslim emperor Shah Jahan in Agra, India. Taj Mahal was constructed over a period of twenty-two years, employing twenty thousand workers. It was made entirely of marble. The Taj Mahal incorporates and expands on design traditions of Persian architecture and earlier Mughal architecture. The Indian period is unique in its art, literature and architecture. Indian art is constantly challenged as it rises to the peak of achieving the ideals of one philosophy in a visual form, then begins anew for another. This challenge and revolution in thought ovides, Indian artists with reasons for innovatiion and creation,…

Bernier’s account certainly has utility when tasked with understanding North Indian society under Mughal rule, but it only provides a snapshot in time and cannot be used as data for extrapolating what North Indian society under Mughal rule was entirely like. In understanding Bernier’s account, it is paramount to remember that Bernier is describing the two capital cities of the Mughal empire. These cities are unrepresentative of all North Indian society and do not capture life for those who lived on the periphery of the Mughal empire. It is also worth noting that Bernier wrote his letter in Delhi in 1663 during the reign of Aurangzeb. Aurangzeb’s rule is unrepresentative of the history of Mughal rule, as he was only one of many Mughal rulers.…
It has a rich architectural, archaeological and cultural heritage. The walled city of Alwar was laid out in 17th century A.D. based on ancient town planning principles in the form of a gated community with intricate and compact social fabric. The surrounding contiguous development of the city is less dense and is planned on the basis of modern town planning principles. The central core serves as CBD of the city with traditional economic activities such as wholesale businesses, textiles, jewellery, handicrafts and art industries. Historic neighborhoods of the city portray rich Rajputana style of architectural elements like Jalis, Jharokhas, brackets and courtyard system of planning which is unique to only the old city area. Above mentioned facts makes it necessary to study the historic city of Alwar and its core elements in order to revive and bring forth its old and rich character and redirect it towards smart cities programme of Government of India (Figure 3). Greenfield development is quite difficult to implement on large scale in India because of its much debatable land acquisition bill. Hence, primarily focus of urban development of GoI is on brown field development. This study is an attempt to explore possibilities to renew their heritage and flourish their potential to make them socio-economically as well as…
British Empire had gained its full vigour and was named the most powerful political and military force in India, after Tipu Sultan of Mysore was defeated in 1799. Roughly from here had commenced the prolonged history of British architecture that was rule in India for the next 200 years. With this elevated status the Britons also gauged the need and responsibility to govern territories under their control and to be viewed as a powerful, civilized force by the Indians. The Military Boards established by the English contributed to the majority of secular architecture, like barracks, forts, mess for soldiers and other assorted buildings. However, for the purposes of government and the church, something more authoritative was needed to assert British dominance. Hence, Government Houses and Town Halls, towed closely behind changing trends in Britain to a great extent and also demonstrated the continued influence of the self-styled `pattern books`. In fact, history of British architecture in India reveals that it is from these `pattern books` that the bulk of the Company`s designs were carried out.…
The foundation of the empire was laid in 1526 by ahir al-Din Mu?ammad Babur, a Chagatai Turk (so called because his ancestral homeland, the country north of the Amu Darya [Oxus River] in Central Asia, was the heritage of Chagatai, the second son of Genghis Khan). Babur was a fifth-generation descendant of Timur on the side of his father and a 14th-generation descendant of Genghis Khan. His idea of conquering India was inspired, to begin with, by the story of the exploits of Timur, who had invaded the subcontinent in 1398.…
