APUSH essay- History of Jamestown

Jamestown, established in 1607, was the first permanent English colony in North America. The history of this settlement is important because it was a model for the other colonies to be established. Joint- stock companies enabled investors who wanted to explore other lands to fulfill their dreams. A joint-stock company, known as the Virginia Company of London, provided the funds for the establishment of Jamestown. The charter from the Virginia Company stated that they were searching for gold and a sea route through America to the Indies. The motives to leave England and settle in North America varied from unemployment to religious freedom. Unfortunately, speaking different languages makes communication difficult. Settlers at Jamestown took part in trade with the Powhatan natives, yet sometimes they wanted information more than they wanted goods. Powhatan, the chief of as many as 30 tribes, wanted the settlement of Jamestown to become one of his tribes. So, he captured Captain John Smith. Upon the execution of Captain Smith, Pocahontas, the daughter of Chief Powhatan, stepped in and saved his life. They negotiated plans that benefitted both parties and Pocahontas took on the role as the peacemaker.
In 1610, Lord De La Warr arrived with requests from the Virginia Company: go to war with the Powhatan Indians. This wasn’t a difficult task because the colonists were famished and diseased. The raids ended in 1614 with a peace settlement and the marriage of Pocahontas and an English colonist by the name of John Rolfe. Rolfe saved Jamestown economically by perfecting a tobacco growing system. The demand for this cash crop in England led Jamestown to comfortable financially. Yet, peace with the Indians did not last long and the Second Anglo-Powhatan War would take place in 1644.

The English colonization of the Americas resulted in a wide variety of ideas and concepts. Although each settlement was under the name of English, they all differ in some regions of the structure. Jamestown and Plymouth, two of the earliest successful colonies, share certain similarities, however, there are major differences, especially in their political, economic, religious and social configuration. Established on May 14, 1607, Jamestown, located on the banks of the James River, is the first permanent English settlement in North America. On the verge of failure, the production of modern day tobacco saves this settlement. Unlike Jamestown created with the aim of acquiring land, Plymouth Colony in 1620 was formed by a group of religious dissenters,…

The goal of 105 colonists who settled in Jamestown in 1605 was to seek gold and establish possible trade routes into the Pacific Coast, modern United States’ West Coast. However, they faced incredible hostility from the local Indian tribes led by Chief Powhatan, a warrior who had great influence over his people. Another challenge faced by colonists included new diseases that killed a good number of colonists. The little medical understanding was not helpful in helping overcome this challenge. However, it was hunger that really forced colonists to think of changing their mission of looking for gold and looking for routes to the west.…

The Jamestown colony was located near present day James City County, Virginia. Jamestown was the first permanent settlement by the English in what is in current day known as the United States. The location of Jamestown was selected primarily for the fact that it provided a favorable defensive location against any other foreign powers that may have tried to gain control of the colony. John Smith, Robert Hunt along with others provided inspirational leadership for the colonists but even so starvation became a very apparent problem. The hostile relations with the local Native American people and a lack of any profitable exports only made matters worse. Despite this and a horrible winter bearing down on them, the colonists persevered. At the end of the first winter only 60 of the original 214 English colonists survived. (jamestown virginia) The settlers who came over on the initial three ships were not well-equipped for the life they found in Jamestown. In addition to the “Gentry” who was not accustomed to manual or skilled labor, they consisted mainly of English farmers who were not prepared physically or emotionally for the problems that would face them. (old and sold antique digest) Yet despite this they persevered and worked as a team to establish a colony. However, when two ships, crudely constructed in Bermuda, arrived at the settlement with no supplies, when the colonists desperately needed supplies the most, the settlers packed up and abandoned…

Pocahontas was the daughter of the powerful chief, Powhatan, of the Algonquian Indians. Her true name was Matoaka, but she became known as Pocahontas, “which means ‘Little Wanton’, a playful, frolicsome little girl” (Morenus 1). On April 26, 1607, the original colonists arrived in Virginia, and on May 13, 1607 the colonists settled in Jamestown (Lemay, XIV). Pocahontas soon developed affection for the settlers and brought them food often. In early December of 1607, Captain John Smith and seven other colonists decided to venture into the Chickahoming River country to obtain corn for the inhabitants (Woodward, 64). Native Americans captured the men and murdered all of the Englishmen, except for John Smith. They held him captive, and if not for the sacrifice of Pocahontas he would have suffered the same fate as his men. “Suddly a little Indian girl rushed in and took Smith’s head in her arms and laid her owne upon his to save him from death [sic]”(Mays).…
