Foreign Policies and Key Events: * In 1629 a group of non-Separatist Puritans fearing for the faith and the future, secured a royal charter to form the Massachusetts Bay Company * During the Great Migration of the 1630s, about 75,000 refugees left England; not all of them were Puritans and only about 14,000 came to Massachusetts—many were attracted to the warm and fertile West Indies, especially the sugar-rich island of Barbados.

* Sir Walter Raleigh- established the colony of Roanoke. * Anne Hutchinson- was forced from Puritan society for my religious beliefs and moved to Rhode Island. * William Bradford- the governor of the Pilgrims in Plymouth for over 30 years. * Squanto-helped the Pilgrims plant corn and served as an interpreter. * Roger Williams- founded Providence, Rhode Island after I was driven from Massachusetts Bay. * John Winthrop- a Puritan leader and governor in the Massachusetts Bay colony. * William Penn- was a Quaker who believed in religious tolerance and welcomed people of all faiths into Philadelphia. * John Rolfe- married Pocahontas to bring temporary peace to Jamestown and the Native Americans * Peter Stuyvesant- was the Dutch governor of New Netherland, who did not want to surrender to the Duke of York. * John Smith- was a leader in Jamestown. Pocahontas saved my life. * Lord Baltimore- founded the colony of Maryland and later passed the "Toleration Act" for religious freedom for Christians. * James Oglethorpe- started the colony of Georgia so that debtors could leave English prisons. * Thomas Hooker- was a minister who disagreed with voting qualifications in Mass. and started the colony of
