Deer introduced “limecrime” on eBay in 2004 as a way to gain exposure for her DIY fashion line. The clothes she designed and ultimately modeled were bright and colorful, but finding makeup to match the clothing was not an easy task. “I modeled everything myself and wanted my whole look to be on-brand, so colorful makeup became my staple,” she said. In 2008, the Russian born CEO launched the company Lime Crime, a makeup company that develops animal-friendly eye shadows, lipsticks, and nail polish. The colorful cosmetics have names like Venus, Unicorn Lipstick, and Zodiac Glitter.

Recently, Doe, who now lives in New York, added a new category to the Lime Crime repertoire: Velvetines—a liquid matte lipstick that stays on and doesn’t fall apart.
