The rising jazz bands used the saxophone as one of the lead instruments. Also, helped to show that the saxophone was capable of playing on more than one stage. And when needed it was able to provide back up by playing harmony parts. Such as, counter melody or adding flourishes such as growling which is humming a pitch while playing the saxophone, and overtones. The overtone series is how an instrument can produce multiple octaves and how woodwinds such as the saxophone to extend their range such as Michael Brecker in the song Delta City Blues. On tenor saxophone he used the overtone series while using an arpeggio and to reach a note that is outside of the usual range of the tenor.
