Vietnam was part of the French empire before World War Two. During the war the Japanese took over, when they retreated the people took the opportunity to establish their own government lead by Ho Chi Minh. He had been removed from power at the end of the war. Unfortunately the Russians and Eastern Europe did not want to recognize his rule as they believed that Ho Chi Minh was the true ruler of Vietnam.
Despite the French getting huge help from America, they struggled to cope with the Viet Minhs’s guerrilla tactics who were getting help from the Communist China. Vietnam was meant to be ruled by Bao Dai who had support from the West. Ho Chi Minh had support from the Russians, Chinese and Eastern Europe who were all communists.
In May 1954, the French Parachute Regiment was attacked by the North Vietnamese and surrendered which resulted in a horrible mess up for the French people. During that month the French decided to pull out of Vietnam.
In July 1954, it had been decided that the country would be divided into two. The North being lead by Ho Chi Minh and the South being lead by Bao Dai. In 1956 an election would be held in the North and the South to decide on a leader that would run the whole country, however this election did not take place and the divide between the North and South became indefinite by
