How Learning about Hoarding Helps
The most current issue that is going on for me is hoarding. In the small town I live in that’s what people intend to do. In my own words and research I will explain why here everyone chooses to do it. Throughout the rest of my paper you will see that the information collected by psychologists and researchers to see how hoarders came to be and how they should get treated.
Symptoms and behavior
In this small town everyone seems to think that buying and collecting possessions is just how they were raised. In truth I started looking around and seeing how people acted when something was missing or needed to be thrown away, and they put up their guard in a hurry. . I started talking to a couple of my neighbors about what they thought hoarding was. It turns out that all of them said hoarding is when you can’t walk into their homes without trying to maneuver through objects and everything is trash. Most said it is like the television show that comes on. When I asked what about here in this town would you consider that some are a hoarder? One responded no that’s just in this town’s nature to collect objects because years ago we did have a grocery store and a school and now we don’t. Truth is a lot of us just want to keep as much resources as we can. Another said yes there are a few people that have symptoms of a hoarder. We need to clean up this town and bring back resources to make this town better. Some symptoms show fast like severe anxiety when not wanting anyone to wanting to throw away an object, not wanting people to touch possessions, the worse of them all needing to keep items that they might need in the future. David Tolin. Ph.D.(2014) said that some behavior that occurs with this disorder may include pulling objects out of the trash, storing as much possessions anywhere even if it is not in their home, and finally choosing to stay at home so no one can enter the

“On Dumpster Diving” is an essay about a homeless man who shares his experiences on how he obtained his necessities while he was homeless and how to be most effective at dumpster diving. He goes over the different kinds of food commonly found in dumpsters and how to determine what is safe to eat, and what to stay away from. Location is also an important factor he considers. He learned that college student tend to be more wasteful than others, throwing out many good items, including food, particularly around the end of the semester when they have to move. Because of this, he describes the dumpsters in an area inhabited manly by college students and being “rich”. After explaining more dumpster diving techniques and identifying how wasteful the general population is, he ends the essay with two lessons learned. The first lesson is to only take what he needs, a found item he cannot use or make useful by trading holds no value. The second lesson learned is that material objects have a shelf life whereas mental things are longer lived. He states, “Once I was the sort of person who invests objects with sentimental value. Now I no longer have those objects, but I have the sentiments yet.”…

Every person is commonly known for their unique personality, and the traits each of us have that are different than others. One thing many people suffer from is some Personality Disorder such as Antisocial Personality Disorder. Antisocial Personality Disorder (APD) is a disorder that is going against and violating other people's rights (Corner, 2014). Individuals with this disorder are more found to link with a criminal history or showing signs of criminal activity (Corner, 2014). Researchers are more apt to look at a person's behavior rather than personality traits and psychopathological aspects of what caused this disorder (Martens, 2000). Though, the signs are linked to developing during childhood; doctors cannot diagnose a patient until the age of 18 stated by the DSM-5 (Corner, 2014). Criminal behavior in people with Antisocial Personality Disorder usually mellows after the age of 40, but some people continue criminal acts throughout their life meaning a bigger problem that still needs to be resolved (Corner, 2014). Being able to tell that a person has Antisocial Personality Disorder and is willing to get help are most likely to change rather than those that don't seek treatment. The best treatment found for Antisocial Personality Disorder is psychotherapy (Bagaric, Jonovska, & Marcinko, 2014). Being able to detect the primary points of Antisocial Personality Disorder will help others be able to recognize and help others that may suffer from this disorder and not know it.…

It is common for people to throw away belongings that were once important to them. This is because our society has a tendency to be wasteful. In the essays “The Town Dump” by Wallace Stegner, “On Dumpster Diving” by Lars Eighner, and “The Town Dump” by Howard Nemerov, the authors all display their opinions when it comes to the topic of value, and items that have been thrown away. Through the use of imagery, the three authors depict their attitudes towards the idea that one man’s trash may or may not be another man’s treasure. Therefore showing that every object can have a value to a person that others see as invaluable.…

Who throws away the best stuff? Is dumpster diving really necessary to people living on the streets? In the text book, Lars Eighner, “On Dumpster Diving”, tells about when he was homeless out on the streets. He told that students usually had the best things because they threw out whatever they did not want because they have their parents to buy everything for them. He had two rules while living out on the street. Rule number one was, take only what is of use. The second rule was, material things that are not required are not necessary.…

After seeing people scrounge through trash just to survive or go gleaning through the stuff that's not good enough for anyone else, I began to realize what is most important. It is definitely not any material possession that can be bought. It is something that I believe every person must find for themselves. Sometimes it is family or other relationships, and other times it's just any type of work a person finds gratifying. In any instance, it almost always involves being around and communicating with other people. One person in a movie about gleaning found that something that made him at least appear to be happy was teaching poor, mostly black people to learn how to read and write. He had a masters degree in biology and probably could have done much greater things and made a lot more money, but apparently he seemed to be happy living off food he gleaned and helping others who otherwise may not have received it. The dumpster diver also found out how little material things meant after coming into poverty. He saw people who collected things and found things like money that used to be so important to him, to not mean much of…

After considering the symptoms of affluenza, only three of them are prevalent in myself or around me. The first symptom that I suffer from is that I am running out of room to store my stuff; more or less because of "shopping fever". Even though I don't think I am infected with affluenza, there are a large number of people in developed countries who are. It can be very detrimental, however, there are some good aspects that should be considered. Anyone who would have this symptom would obviously have an overabundance of stuff building up whether it is in their bedroom or their house in general. Unlike most people who have this problem, I don't only acquire this mass of "stuff" to help myself, but also to help others. For example, because I used…

Compulsive hoarding is the impulse to hold onto unnecessary items due to the idea that they hold some sort of emotional value. It is a severe problem that affects the United States and it can lead people to awful and unfortunate situations such as illness and even homelessness. Studies have shown that one in four people are hoarders with the leading causes being depression or loss of a loved one. It is also apparent that a large amount of the homeless population was evicted from their housing due to it being condemned from hoarding.
