Hoby Essay
HOBY, The Hugh O’Brian Youth leadership conference, is a once in a lifetime experience that would be more than a privilege to attend. The chance to learn how to guide and lead others effectively is an exciting opportunity. It would help me build relationships with people and also teach me how to be my own person while still attending to others’ needs. Not only will being chosen as a HOBY ambassador help me with various activities in which I participate now, it will also assist me in my future endeavors. I should be chosen for our school’s HOBY ambassador because I am the type of person who works hard for what I want and will do what it takes to achieve my goals. I am fourth in my class and have over a 4.0 grade point average. I am a person who challenges myself by putting myself in situations where I am forced to push myself and go outside of my comfort zone. I don’t think it’s right to limit yourself to what’s easy, because if you do, you will never grow as a person. I have an outgoing personality, and I am not afraid to express my thoughts and opinions about what I think needs to be done. On the contrary, I am also a very respectful person who values others’ opinions and I listen to what others have to say. I am an organized person who stays on task and gets the job done. I am extremely reliable, and you can count on me to always do my part and finish the task at hand. I strongly believe I would be an excellent representation of Washington High School. If I am given the chance to participate in the 2013 HOBY conference, I promise to take full advantage of the opportunity presented to me. HOBY is a chance for me to prove to others and to myself that I have the skills and qualities of a good leader. Though I am fully capable of being a leader to people, the word “best” is an illusion far too overused. There is always room for improvement, and the learning and experiences HOBY offers will help mold and shape me into a better leader and a better person all around. I want to be able to influence people to do the right thing because that is what being a leader is all about. It doesn’t mean you have authority over anyone; being a leader means you have the will to accomplish the things in which you believe, to be influential, and to lead by example. As Harold R. McAlindon said, “Do not follow where the path may lead. Go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.” I truly believe the word “leader” is one of the many terms that helps define me and that is why I should be chosen for Washington High School’s HOBY ambassador.

I want to become a Merrimack Ambassador because I want to share the love I have for Merrimack with potential students. I specifically want the students to fall in love with Merrimack, just like I did. I believe that I am an outgoing individual, which I feel like is an important trait for an Ambassador because you need to be able to interact with the individuals who you are giving a tour. At the same time, I am also a little reserved which can also be essential when giving a tour because you need to be able to connect with all of the students and not scare them away. I also feel that I have a lot of school pride. School pride is essential when being an Ambassador because you are sharing your love for Merrimack with interested students. Finally,…

    3. The Hissom lawsuit, also known to many as the Homeward Bound lawsuit, affected people that have developmental disabilities, their families, and services that have since then been put into place in a vast majority of ways. This lawsuit that was filed against the Hissom institution in the 1980s accused the caretakers of not providing quality care for their loved ones. Seven parents came together to make their grievances known about the caregiving staff abusing and neglecting their children that were housed at the Hissom institution, which started a chain of events that lead to the types of community services that are now offered across the state of Oklahoma to children, and adults, that have developmental disabilities. To understand the universality of human nature we can explore common traits and characteristics, many of which are prevalent in Jane Yolen's novel, Briar Rose. Yolen produces a very powerful and complex novel exploring the emotional aftermath of the Holocaust. Yolen has intertwined the facts of the Holocaust with the story of Briar Rose, a traditional fairy tale, in order to speak about the Holocaust without having to go into the historical detail of the experience. Yolen whose background is Jewish has previously written a novel detailing the Holocaust, uses Briar Rose as an extension of her work. Significant aspects of human nature that Yolen focuses on include the courage and heroism of the character Josef as he expresses the power of survival, the ability of Gemma to cope with her history and memories from the Holocaust and the journey of Becca to unravel the truth of her grandmothers past and therefore her identity.…

I would like to become an ambassador because I want more confidence and want to meet new people and be a leader to others. Being a Student Ambassador means that you will represent the school at different events. I really enjoy coming to school and love coming here every day, and it would be nice to be a part of something that I love. I like participating in charity events and extra-curricular activities. What makes it good is the ability to listen to the needs and desires of others, to organize forums about issues and to become role models to other students. I am very friendly, nice, outgoing and easy to get along with. I am also very responsible I will get to my meetings on time. I could make the students feel as if they are at home. I would make them think twice about leaving the program and if they need any help I can show them to come to me or to an instructor and not be scared. On my first day of school here I was nervous and scared but a ambassador helped me and made me feel comfortable she helped me with any questions I had. After a few days I started getting the hang of the program and she showed and encouraged me to want to become an ambassador. I love the program that I am in, it’s very interesting and my teachers are really nice and they help me with anything that I need help on. Im happy that I chose this program. The reason I chose this program is because it fit my interest the best. I like to be busy, being around a friendly atmosphere, greeting everyone, and giving all the help I can. Same applies to when I’m in class I’m focused and ready to begin working getting my class work done and assisting anyone who needs help. I find it very easy to encourage people as it…
