Hodgkin's Lymphoma Case Study
One day in Walmart, a 10-year-old girl gets a call from the doctor. She is told that previous testing showed she had cancer. Emotions swirled through her mind, and the events in her life became fast pace. By the next week, she was in the hospital taking a treatment for a cancer called Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Hodgkin’s Lymphoma can change one’s life, but with the proper care it can be survived. Hodgkin’s Lymphoma is a cancer of the lymphocytes. The lymphocytes are part of the lymphatic system which is the system that fights infection. This cancer has the ability to spread anywhere throughout the body. Cells in Hodgkin’s Lymphoma are Reed-Sternberg cells. These cells are larger in size compared to others, and these cells are limited with immune cells surrounding them. Sir Thomas Hodgkin, being the founder of the disease, paired with William Roentgen to influence studies for the disease. Hodgkin’s can come in many forms such as Nodular Sclerosis, Lymphocyte rich, Mixed Cellularity, and Lymphocyte depleted. Nodular Sclerosis being the most common, Mixed …show more content…
These symptoms could involve a large tumor ranging anywhere from the neck to the groin. Symptoms could also include fatigue, fever, weight loss, itching, and strong sweats during the night. Once a patient has noticed these symptoms and consulted a doctor, the doctor will most likely do testing on the patient. The tests could be bloods tests, but the cancer cannot be diagnosed solely on blood tests. Biopsies or CT/PET scans must also be used. When a biopsy is performed, the infected tumor is sampled by the doctor. CT/PET scans can be used to pinpoint any signs of cancer by a machine. To add, PDG-PET scans are more advanced scans that are used to spot cancer earlier. Clinical trials are used to learn more about the disease. Just like the PDG-PET scan, clinical trials also help to diagnose cancer earlier

A.T. is a 21-year-old college student. He works part-time as a manual laborer, uses half a can of smokeless tobacco each week, and drinks a six-pack of beer on the weekend. A year ago in September, he discovered a small, painless lump in his lower left neck. Over the quarter, he experienced increasing fatigue and a 10-pound weight loss that he attributed to “working and studying too hard.” In the spring he saw a nurse practitioner at the student health center who immediately referred him to an oncologist. A lymph node biopsy revealed Hodgkin’s disease. The gallium scan, bone scan, and CT scan of the chest, abdomen, and pelvis all came back negative. A staging laparotomy was conducted a month later to confirm the diagnosis. His diagnosis was Hodgkin’s disease, stage IA, mixed cellularity. You are a staff nurse in the outpatient oncology services when…

According to the National Cancer Institute, “In 2015, an estimated 1,658,370 new cases of cancer will be diagnosed in the United States” (“Cancer Statistics”). What if one of those cases was your mother? Husband? Grandson? What if more horrifically, it was all three? For Mary Kenyon, that devastating thought became a reality. In just three brief years, she lost her mother, husband, and grandson. All three of them battled cancer, and two of the three died from the disease. Through strength, resilience, and a whole lot of faith, Mary overcame grief and shows true heroism by inspiring people and helping them defeat the same obstacles she faced.…

Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma is a type of cancer that begins within immune system cells called lymphocytes. Similar to other cancers, lymphoma occurs when lymphocytes are uncontrollably growing and multiplying. These lymphocytes are white blood cells that move throughout the body with the help of a fluid called lymph. There they are transported by a network of different vessels that make up the lymphatic system, which is a part of the immune system.…

But when asked when is a good time to rotate car tires or get an oil change, they will tell you the exact mileage when both are needed. Many people can say that they have heard of Hodgkin’s Lymphoma better known as Hodgkin’s Disease, another form of Lymphoma, but very few can attest to knowing what Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma really is. Truthfully, most people do not know that it is in fact, a form of cancer of the lymph nodes. This form of cancer kills thousands every year and most have never heard of it. Even though people are not fully aware of Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, they need to know what Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma is, the cause, who it affects, and treatment.…

In our bodies we have an immune system that fights infections and other diseases. The lymphatic system is also a part of the immune system. Hodgkin’s disease is a type of cancer of the lymphatic system. It begins in cells of the immune system. It happens when a lymphocyte (usually a B cell) becomes abnormal, called a Reed-Sternberg cell. The Reed-Sternberg cell divides and makes copies of itself. The division of the new cells continues, making a numerous amount of abnormal cells. The abnormal cells don 't die when they should and they don 't protect the body from infections or other diseases. The extra cells form a tumor.…

    Hodgkin's Disease

In 1832 Thomas Hodgkin described a progressively fatal condition characterized by enormous lymph node swelling that he believed to be one disease. Characteristic cells involved in this disease were identified microscopically by Sternberg and Reed in 1898 and 1902, respectively. The identification of these cells, now known as Reed-Sternberg cells, allowed for the initial classification of Hodgkin 's disease. In the past two decades advances in histology and immunohistology have revealed that the Reed-Sternberg cell is B-cell lineage, and that Hodgkin 's disease is not a single cell, but instead two separate diseases. Hodgkin 's disease. The four stages of Hodgkin 's disease are based on factors such as location, whether cancer is found in more than one group of lymph nodes, or on one or both sides of the diaphragm. The potential curability of Hodgkin 's disease was first recognized in 1920, when patients with localized tumor with radiation were shown to have a 10% survival rate. By the 1960s about one third of patients were being cured with radiation. In 1970, the National Cancer Institute (NCI) reported that patients with advanced Hodgkin 's disease could attain complete remission and long-term survival using a combination chemotherapy of nitrogen mustard, Oncavin (vincristine), procarbazine, and prednisone, known as Mopp.…

With ever story of victory, comes a drowning idea of failure. Throughout our live, these battles are fought, taking not only mental strength, but physical as well. Some of these battles are chosen, while the rest flank from behind. With this in mind, a story of victory must be told, on behalf of my Aunt, Joenell. Her battle took place in April, of 2009, she went to the Suttee Delta hospital, in Antioch California for a doctor’s visit, for fear that something was wrong, during this visit she informed her doctor that she felt a not on her left breast. Soon after, she had a mammogram, and an ultrasound done, revealing three cancerous lumps. As the doctor went into detail, she started to realize the gravity of the situation. For the first time; at the age of 59, she was confronted with the most life threating event she had ever faced. So for a second opinion, she went to the Epic Cancer center, also in Antioch California. Certainly, the last thing anyone would like to hear during a doctor’s visit, she knew there would be some decisions to be made, time to study up.…

Lymphoma is a type of cancer made up of t-cell and b-cell lymphocytes, which are part of the immune system. The lymphocytes are what is accounted for when it comes to malignancies in the head and neck. The two major diagnoses would be Hodgkin's Lymphoma and Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma. Since this is such a broad category, and not a single disorder, this type of lymphoma can present itself in different ways.
