This assignment aims to give a feedback about the learning experience acquired through the presentation assignment. It also reflects the importance of the module in general and what impact it had on the personal reasoning for the importance of Intercultural Awareness in the business world.
Therefore, a summary for the overall approach used to research our presentation will be presented, as well as a feedback regarding the assignment and the group synergy.
II. Intercultural Communication & Business:
Nowadays, the world is shrinking. Living in the Globalization era means that we are moving towards a financial and cultural integration, where we became more interdependent and interconnected. Therefore, “Intercultural Communication” became a crucial factor in our daily life. Nevertheless, it plays an even more important role in the business world because of the acculturation phenomenon we are witnessing, having a minimum amount of knowledge about the different cultures is vital to have an effective communication globally (Business Dictionary, 2011).
III. Hofstede’s Dimensions:
Many authors researched the relationship between cultures and business. They tried to come up with theories that can help in understanding the differences by acquiring certain skills in dealing with different cultures. Geert Hofstede is one of the most popular names in this field. He did several studies about the subject and wrote books to explain his findings. His most famous one is the IBM study, held in more than 50 countries around the world. As a result of the IBM study, Hofstede came up with five cultural dimensions that can be used to assess each countries culture; power distance, uncertainty avoidance, long-term orientation, individualism, and masculinity index.
In our presentation, we chose a topic about the masculinity index. Therefore, an in depth analysis for this dimension will follow in the next part.
