Economic Concepts
During the holiday season people dedicate their time to find and purchase gifts for their friends and relatives. In the articles case, Singaporeans who receive these holiday gifts tend to give the unwanted gift away or keep it in order to avoid any harsh feelings and yet the holiday season, in terms of economics, is when there is an increase of companies’ profits comes from during that period. The Companies tend to increase their productivity, production, supply, their resources as well as others. As a result of these increases, the majority of the companies are doing well.
People tend to find these objects that are something those we as well as others want and when they purchase the object, they don’t think about whether the object/item will be used or is even needed for everyday life. However this trends still continues to exist and the companies are benefiting from it.
The article states that the amount of goods and services bought during the 4th quarter of the year increases, this period is when shoppers feel attracted to go to shopping malls to purchase any item, this applies to any state of the country’s economy. The holiday season is the time where businesses and companies launch big sales no matter the competition. Retailers also do lots of marketing and advertising campaigns and as a result consumers are pestered with imaginable goods and services. No matter the condition of the economy, the last quarter will always be when businesses gain a lot of profit or income. This last quarter is where the demand for advertisement jobs are higher which will result for companies having to hire new workers to stay in tempo with the consumers demands.
Other companies also benefit from this since consumer goods and services companies require more warehouses or more land resources to keep their equipment and stock. As a result the demand of warehouses will increases as the supply decreases as when more warehouses are rented, there will be a decrease in availability of warehouses for other companies as a result, the competition to find the best available warehouse will increase. Another advantage for companies is to create marketing such as gift cards. In addition, some consumers prefer to avoid any traffic that may occur during the course of buying the product. With this fact, internet communication companies must create programs and marketing gimmicks to attract people to use and buy their products to create a smooth transaction when consumers are purchasing their products online. In addition to having smooth transactions online, it creates the need of logistics, as the store will need to pay logistics companies to deliver the product.
The holiday season shows a period where in business are under a lot of high expectation, huge commitments and the time for firms to do well are beyond scarce. With careful planning by firms and suppliers, it is possible to avoid any problems during the holiday season. All business needs a holiday strategy to produce their products and must plan how they will store their products, find warehouses, invest in logistics, etc. Firms must also create an analysis on the previous holiday sales and try to fix flaws from the sales during the previous years.
A majority of the retailers have learned from past holiday seasons that customer love to shop both in stores and online. As a result, many retailers have created websites for customers to purchase their products online. This creates a smooth flow of transaction and results into an increase in productivity for stores as now consumers have the chance to purchase items online and for business, it just means more consumers. However, the result of more consumers creates a scarcity of products that are on demand.
During the holiday season, many businesses would lack the labor resources to keep up with the demand of producing various hot products. As a result the labor work force would increase or the unemployment rate of a country would decrease as shown in the
Diagrams below.

The diagram above illustrates the employment rate during the 4th quarter. As you can see, the employment rate, from the years 2000 and beyond, are the highest in November. This is because consumers tend to rush and purchase their gifts for their friends. As a result retailers must hire workers to keep up with the amount of orders produced by customers. During the years 2008 had the 3rd lowest employment rate in total. This is due to the economic crisis that occurred around the globe, the employment saw a great decrease and yet during the global crisis, the employment rate in November remains the highest. This is due to the fact that retailers are preparing for the hectic holiday season sales and wants to create an increase in productivity before the time strikes.
During the holiday season, the revenue generated must be higher and retailers must put in their time to perform preparation. As I have mentioned in the previous paragraph, the employment rate, during the years of 2000 and beyond, is constantly the highest in November. This allows us to see that firms are willing to prepare their products before the date where in consumers will line up for their products, if the products are on demand. If the company has put a lot of money into their preparation and did not earn the income that they set their goal for then business will do their best to fix their flaws from that year and forget about whatever loss that they receive and focus on the coming years.
Consumes must consider the 2 following questions: “is this product a want or a need?”. As we are rational decision makers, the various types of influence us to consume various objects that are said to increase our status and be popular however there is no real need to purchase the object.
