My research question is how signing the Sino-British Joint Declaration in 1984 lead the Hong Kong people identify themselves as Hong Kongers
Thesis statement: The period from the Sino British Joint Declaration of 1984 to the handover in 1997 was an era of change in Hong Kong. Hong Kong people was facing a lot of problems during the transitional period and one of the controversial issues is identity. Due to the suspicious of the Chinese government policies on governing Hong Kong, Hong Kong people tended to identify themselves as Hong Kongers in order to maintain the principle of “Hong Kong people governing Hong Kong”.
Evidence 1: In 1974 -1980, legal immigrants from China to Hong Kong remained 19000-25000 per year. In 1980 to 1983, legal immigrants from China averaged 55000 per year. The data showed that even the people in China were not trust the Chinese government. It can be seen that the political situation in China was not good which led many people immigrated to Hong Kong in order to have a better future.
Evidence 2: According to a survey in 1990, it showed that 60% of people in Hong Kong identified themselves as Hong Kongers while 25% of people identified themselves as Chinese. Compare to the data collected in 1990, people who identified themselves as Hong Kongers increased in …show more content…
Most of the legislators were continued to be appointed by the British Government.
It led Hong Kong people to suspect that the political changes were conspiracies by the British. The British Government created a chance for establishing democracy under Chinese rule so the British government did not establish fully democracy in Hong Kong.
Evidence 2: The British decolonized without independence in Hong Kong but allowed the other British colonies like Africa or other part of Asia hold an election to become independent or not. It led Hong Kong people to think about the relationship between British and China. It seems that British tried to maintain a good relationship with China in order to earn more trading interest so British negotiated and give Hong Kong back to China as an exchange of large market in China
