Honor Killing Research Paper

Honor killing is when the men of the household kill another family member (mainly women of the house) in the name of honor. The father of the house is generally involved. Normally when a woman has been a victim of honor killing she has been accused of committing an act that would bring dishonor on the family: refusing to marry, a victim of rape or sexual assault, asking for a divorce, traveling without consent of a husband or father. Men can be victims of honor killing as well. Sometimes the young men of the house are asked to kill the females, even if it's their sister or mother. Rifqa Bary as a young child was raped. To escape the dishonor that would bring to her family, The Bary’s moved to the US. As Rifqa got older and American society started to shape her, Rifqa started to grow fond of a new religion other than muslim. Instead of the keran on her free time she began to read the bible. Her parents found out and gave her an ultimatum or she would be put to death by her own father. “In the same way my family left sri lanka, in order to obtain our image, now I have done the despicable. They would have to kill me” (NBC news). Rifqa terrified then escaped to a preacher's house in tampa florida. Rifqa story quickly flooded every news station around. Since she left home she has never returned to see her family. As a 17 year old girl she was swarmed by news stations.She said in an interview “This is not just some threat, this is reality” (Cnn). When she was 22 she wrote a book about her story. She says that two specific moments shaped her into the god loving woman she is today and turned her away from the harsh ways of the muslim culture. Rifqa’s where abouts are still unknown for she must still be in hiding after 2010 for she knows her family will still feel the need to kill her after she worships another
