Adversity Research Paper
This paper was especially hard for me to write. Usually there is a very strict explanation as to what is needed and expected. However, with this paper it was different. We got a statement and were able to choose the way in which we wanted to portray the idea or thought. To me that is difficult. I have never been one to be short on words and can normally be found talking to whom ever will listen. The topic that we must write on is "Bravery in the face of Adversity." One definition of bravery I found was " a quality of spirit that enables one to face danger or pain without showing fear. Adversity has been defined as a condition marked by misfortune or bad luck. My first thought was to write about the Civil War and African-American soldiers. …show more content…
Those who have jobs are thankful whether they are teachers, CPAs or a "team member" at the local McDonalds. My mom is not one of those fortunate enough to have a job. For the past few months, we have lived off her savings, child support, and food stamps. Now things are beginning to get down to the wire. When my mom wakes up in the morning, she puts on her best happy face, gets us ready for our day and returns home to pursue the job search. She knows what bad luck tastes like, what it feels like and what it can do to a pay check. My mom is the definition of bravery in the face of adversity. No one really knows that we are almost out of money. In fact, we like to keep things that way. But when given this assignment I knew that one of the best ways to relate this to my life was to look inside my own four walls. Bravery is "a quality of spirit that enables one to face danger and pain without showing fear." We are in danger of losing our lifestyle. My mom must face the heartache and pain that comes from feeling like she is unable to provide for her family. I help out when I can. Mom has that quality of spirit. She can face the problems of our lives without showing fear. I know she is scared. But she hides it well from me and my young brothers because she is brave, she is strong and with God, she can face this …show more content…
In less than twenty-four hours my aunt passed away, followed by a dear friend. More recently, my great uncle died. He was like a father to many of us who, at one time in our lives, were fatherless. I have attended more funeral this year than any one person should have to. Each and every day someone wakes up to an empty spot on the bed beside them, or an empty house, or even without a parent or role model. My family has had to show great bravery in basically a long string of what seems like bad luck. Some of the deaths were from old age, some were from illness, and one was done intentionally before his time should have been up. I believe that if he had someone to teach him about God's love and how when everything seems to be going wrong one can turn to him, that I would still have an eighteen year old cousin, who loved life and what it has to offer. If he had shown true bravery he would still be here today. He showed fear by taking his own life and not trusting God to make a way. It would have helped if he hadn't been raised in a home where there was no God. His mother doesn't believe in Him. Even still, I believe that showing bravery by continuing with life and its hardships takes work. Adversity and bad luck seem to follow some around like a rain cloud. But with God's love and power, He can grant us an understanding to deal with the things that seem like too much to

The brain is a highly sophisticated puzzle with millions of connections that scientists can only dream of unlocking. Unfortunately, the human race has a tendency to ignore the fact that the wisdom accumulated in this small three pound gray mass in our skulls is there to help us with emotion, intelligence, and most importantly: common sense. Although the brain is not fully developed until the age of twenty-five, most people learn their basic thinking and morals during their early stages of life which is why a child has a tendency to act the same way as they were raised. The John F. Kennedy Pool has witnessed its fair share of moral lacking adults and common sense lacking kids. Children at the this swimming hole have the capability of becoming…

Sometimes we think that our plans must lead down a better road, or that God must not love us enough to protect us from this pain we feel, but God actually uses the painful experiences to further develop our character. Vivian Thomas could have given up when it became too discouraging, but instead he persevered and became an inspiration to many people. During times that are hard, God teaches us more about life, ourselves, and most importantly, about Him. V. vulnificus is a gram-negative marine bacterium that is present in high numbers of seafood (shellfish, raw oysters, clams, etc). Inflammation seen in wound infections, endotoxic shock, and tissue necrosis are characteristic symptoms associated with V. Vulnificus. These symptoms are attributed to the endotoxic activity of lipopolysaccharides (LPS) lending itself as a primary virulence factor in V. vulnificus. LPS is a fever-inducing polypeptide that also produces metabolic changes in the hypothalamus. In addition, LPS engenders a cytokine response in mice that contributes to the release and overproduction of tumor necrosis factor (TNF-a). In V. vulnificus cytokines are known to arouse inflammatory responses in the host; and it has been suggested that overactive cytokine induction to the site of infection may cause septic shock, trademark sign of V. vulnificus disease.…

The story I chose is “The Things They Carried” by the author Tim O’Brien. In the course of this essay I will highlight the physical and intangible “burdens” required by a soldier to overcome war which are of vital importance to inhibit the outcomes of a state of devastation. The story gives us insights about what each soldier carried to the combat zone and this was largely determined by necessities, but each man differed in their necessity. It gives a picture of the things a soldier needs to meet his basic needs during war. The basic necessities required in every situation or event lead to an enormous burden but the emotional consequences as an outcome of war lead to a greater burden and so did these emotional…

Bravery was also used to overcome many of the World War II adversities. All throughout the war, members of the armed forces continuously showed bravery as they went to fight in a different country. One such service member, Mr. McIntosh, showed bravery and stamina as he flew back to base, “in his crippled P-47, its cockpit shattered by twin bursts of flak, and enduring ‘pain so bad only morphine could control it’” (Purdum). Another example of bravery is shown in the poem about V-E Day by Katherine Young, in which she talks about a mentally insane mother who braves coming back to the real world after being in a hospital, again (Young). All through the war, many different forms of bravery are seen as a result of various challenges faced. However, World War II also shows when the adversities faced were too much to overcome. During the long war, humanity faced some adversities and promptly failed at meeting those challenges as they had above. Such difficulties include the Prisoners of War, the Concentration Camps, and the use of the phrase the ends justify the…

The author’s mother is a hero to him because of how courageous she was for not getting angry with the conductor after he threw them off the train. The mother had some fear about stepping off that train, but she did not let her son see her sweat instead she gave him some advice that he would never forget. Courage is the power needed to face fears. His mothers had the will and drive to go and face difficulties and eliminate them with passion and power. In this passage, it reminded oneself of something that my Godmother said that will stick with me forever, and it goes like this: never measure yourself by another man’s yardstick. She said this because, oneself continue to worry about the time frame in which it is taking oneself to get a bachelor’s degree. Then went on to tell me how her mother had six kids and she was so determined to get her degree she took one class at a time until she finished and she completed her degree when she was in her forties. Her mother is my hero because of her courage and…

Without courage there would be no bravery in the world. “Courage” by Anne Sexton reaches out and tells us what it is to be brave, she teaches us that we have to have courage, for our own sake. The article “Mich. Teen Helps Save Abduction Victim’s Life” by John Carlisle introduces us to a boy that lives us to the expectations of courage. He shows us that it is hard, but worth it to be courageous. In Michigan, a fourteen year old boy, James Persyn the third had to be more courageous than ever when he decided to save the life of a woman that he did not even know until she came knocking on his door asking for help.…

Without being courageous, you cannot be brave. According to Merriam-Webster Dictionary, courage is “a mental or moral strength to venture, preserve, and withstand danger, fear, or difficulty.” Everyday people show bravery. Every great thing we set out to do, whether its raise children, start a business, study for a degree, or change the world, takes bravery. All through history, there have been men or women who have been called brave, but their deeds have been vastly different. Neither their lives nor their goals have been the same, so we cannot define how brave a person is by their achievements alone. Martin Luther King was seen as courageous, for his commitment to ending the oppression of his people. Helen Keller was brave as well, for having the courage to live her life, in spite of being blind and deaf. Businessmen have been courageous, as have soldiers on the field of battle. The soldiers in The Things They Carried showed bravery every single day and in every single thing that they did during their time before, during, and after the Vietnam War.…

Adversity plays an extremely important role in developing a person’s character, without adversity, certain personal attributes may never be expressed like courage, perseverance, and dedication. For example, George Washington, a founding father of the United States, faced the most powerful military in the world to stand up for something he believed. Not only did he command men, he lived as they did sharing the same hardships. This displayed his character, courage, and dedication, and this spread across the new country. After the Revolutionary War, George Washington was unanimously elected president due to his approach to the adversity that was the British military. George Washington’s actions easily displayed his character and his dedication to his…

They know that God has a plan for them and they should trust in Him with all of their needs. Unfortunately, some of those who don’t know God have resorted to taking their own lives because they felt like there was no one listening to them. The short story I chose to write my essay on is "The Things They Carried" by Tim O'Brien. The soldiers in the story had to deal with not only accepting the deaths of those they became close with, but also dealing with the knowledge that they took another human beings' life. The author shows how they had to carry not only their equipment; but the emotions that came along with being in a war. The emotions I speak of are ones that come from knowing they were mere grunts-and as such, were replaceable. That moment where they silly cease to exist could arrive when they least expected it. This analysis is about the way Cross and his soldiers dealt with the war, not physically but emotionally.…

The reality of war changed many soldiers' lives because of nightmares from firefights and small skirmishes to bombings and atrocities. Many places from Saigon to Khe Sanh are filled with stories from many veterans. A letter from a marine fighting in Khe Sanh said to his Parents "Since we began, we have lost 14 KIA and 44 men WIA. Our company is cut down to half strength, and I think we will be going to Okinawa to regroup. I hope so anyway because I have seen enough of war and its destruction." From the death of close friends any person's emotions would crumble. A normal everyday business person in the shoes of this soldier wouldn't last a day. The experience a soldier goes through will change his view on life forever. This is just showing how it affects people. Seeing death and killing on a daily basis. The random occurrence of death would truly disturb any person. Seeing the death of friends and mangled bodies of South…
