There are many definitions of a hero. Some people think of a hero as being someone who is strong, intelligent, attractive and daring. The figures that have been considered a hero to oneself since growing from a child to an adult have changed. Heroes have many different qualities that are overlooked such as courage, honesty, bravery, passion, and selflessness. The definition of a hero in Webster says a hero is a man admired for his achievement and noble qualities or a person who is admired for outstanding or brave acts or fine qualities (hero, 2013). The author’s mother is a hero to him because of how courageous she was for not getting angry with the conductor after he threw them off the train. The mother had some fear about stepping off that train, but she did not let her son see her sweat instead she gave him some advice that he would never forget. Courage is the power needed to face fears. His mothers had the will and drive to go and face difficulties and eliminate them with passion and power. In this passage, it reminded oneself of something that my Godmother said that will stick with me forever, and it goes like this: never measure yourself by another man’s yardstick. She said this because, oneself continue to worry about the time frame in which it is taking oneself to get a bachelor’s degree. Then went on to tell me how her mother had six kids and she was so determined to get her degree she took one class at a time until she finished and she completed her degree when she was in her forties.
