Concussions happen within the skull cavity. Dave Duerson committed suicide by shooting himself in the chest so he could leave his brain intact, specifying in his last communications with family members that he wanted it to be examined by specialists to determine if he suffered from chronic traumatic encephalopathy, a degenerative brain disease. CTE can only be detected by a brain autopsy. Duerson recognized the symptoms in his own life, exhibiting struggles with memory, depression and impulse control (Stephenson).
