Letter to the Editor
Throughout the article “Hooked on a Myth” Braithwaite argues that fish are able to feel pain the way humans and other mammals do. She does excellent use of scientific terms to create a more persuasive argument and carry a more credible voice. However, the point of this letter is not to highlight her achievements but to point out her flaws. In her article, Braithwaite only suggest that fish may be able to feel pain. Even with all the research she includes, nothing with all certainly tells the audience that fish are capable of experiencing pain.
Braithwaite’s article does not only do use of research, but at the same time includes nothing that actually proves her claims right. At one point of Braithwaite’s article, …show more content…
In the article she explains that fish have nerves that make fish capable of feeling pain “ … fish have the same two types of nociceptors that we do- A-delta and C fibers. So they do have the necessary sensory wiring to detect pain.”(Los Angeles Times, Braithwaite).. An example that she tried to hide from the audience is that “ … certain nerve fibers in mammals (known as c-nociceptors) have been shown to be involved in the sensation of intense experiences of pain. All primitive cartilaginous fish subject to the study, such as sharks and rays, show a complete lack of these fibres and all bony fish – which includes all common types of fish such as carp and trout – very rarely have them.”(Do fish feel pain? Not as humans do, study suggests). This is more accurate representation of what the article should have included and by arguing against it and explaining why this could be wrong, Braithwaite would have made a stronger point.
At the end, Braithwaite’s article may fool a small amount of people with her scientific terms and incomplete research. This article does not do it’s job to carry out her message since it does not include a single concrete prove that fish feel pain, therefore losing
